Birmingham's Civil Rights History Front And Center At Rally For George Floyd - WBHM

Kelly Ingram Park in downtown Birmingham swelled with people, signs and chants Sunday afternoon for what organizers called a rally for justice and peace in response to the death of George Floyd, who died after being arrested by police in Minneapolis on Monday. The rally, sponsored by the Birmingham mayor’s office and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, came one day after a similar protest and march in Birmingham and Hoover.

Speakers at Sunday’s gathering, which included clergy from a variety of faiths, referenced Birmingham’s history of nonviolent protest during the civil rights movement. They also referenced many names of black men and women who died after incidents with law enforcement.

Rev. Arthur Price of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham addresses the crowd. The church was the site of a racist bombing that killed four girls in September 1963.

“You ought to be angry about what happened last week,” said Rev. Arthur Price, the pastor of the 16th Baptist Church in Birmingham. “But the question is what are you going to do about it?”

Price told the crowd they should turn anger into advocacy by voting and pushing elected leaders for changes to policing practices. Other speakers called on people to patronize black businesses. Some spoke of whites who seemed indifferent to what some in the African-American community have experienced.

“Dear White America, I ask you who are you?” activist T. Marie King said. “Are you willing to look at your life and be responsible for it and begin to change?”

Several speakers urged the crowd to resist responding with violence as has been seen in many cities across the country. Both Democratic Senator Doug Jones and Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin noted Birmingham’s progress since the civil rights era.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin

“To say that we as a people are not better off today than we were 50 years ago … that dismisses the sacrifices of the foot soldiers that join us today,” Woodfin said.

Woofin called Birmingham the “blueprint” for a nation divided by race, adding “the enemy is not each other.”

Jackie Freeman, who traveled from Tuscumbia, Ala., for Saturday’s protest and Sunday’s rally, said as an African American mother, some of the police violence against black men captured on video made her think of her two sons. She said she’s thinking more carefully about how she spends her money and how she spends her time.

“You can’t just sit back and Facebook protest and expect things to change,” Freeman said.

Auburn University student Allison Sharp expressed similar feelings about the limits of social media posts. Sharp, who is white, said this was the first rally she had attended.

“I definitely learned the power of the dollar, “Sharp said. “I never really thought to shop specifically at black-owned business. I’ve just thought about donating to nonprofits.”

As Sharp left with a group of friends, they were thinking of black-owned restaurants where they could pick up dinner.

Minneapolis community unites over middle school food drive - Insider - INSIDER

  • A Minneapolis middle school put out a call for 85 meal kits for students and families after many of the city's stores were looted or destroyed during protests.
  • On Sunday, faculty and families were pleasantly overwhelmed to find Sanford Middle School's front lawn completely covered with bags of food and household goods.
  • The food drive resulted in a mountain of cereal boxes and endless piles of supplies.
  • "This will let everyone know that despite everything that's going on, we are a strong-knit city," Sanford Middle School teacher Jabari Browne told Insider.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

In the wake of the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer on Monday, riots have erupted around the country as people protest against police violence against the African American community.

One middle school that's three blocks away from Minneapolis' 3rd precinct police station put out a call for help in response to the looting and destruction of grocery and convenience stores caused by protests, which has impacted students and their families.

"We had a parent that reached out to us who was checking in with other families in the community, and we heard they needed food," Jabari Browne, who's been a special education teacher at Sanford Middle School for five years, told Insider. "Due to the protests, a lot of stores are shut down and burnt down, and we have a lot of kids that don't have transportation."

The school requested 85 meal kits to be donated as part of the drive, Sanford Middle School Principal Amy Nelson told CBS Minnesota reporter Marielle Mohs — but what resulted on Sunday morning was an incredible overflow of donations that has filled the school's lawn with supplies and caused traffic backups all day, Browne told Insider.

Browne estimated that the school received "tens and thousands of donations" starting early Sunday morning — and pictures of the school grounds from Twitter users match that description.

Nelson told CBS Minneapolis that the response is "not surprising."

"We live in a great city, and we have people who want to help," Nelson said. "The response has been overwhelming in a very positive way."

Browne said that the school's food drive is just one symbol of the resilient spirit of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

"It's been hard sleeping these past couple nights. I've been in fear thinking what the town is going to look like when we wake up," he said. "But I was able to sleep well last night knowing we'd be able to make so many kids and families smile."

Browne said: "This will let everyone know that despite everything that's going on, we are a strong-knit city."

Prosecutors: Mentally ill man shoved stranger in front of oncoming Red Line train - Chicago Tribune

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

After the collision, authorities said Lambert left the station and headed to a gas station on State Street, where he bought a 2-liter bottle of Sprite. He then returned to the train station, approached an officer who was investigating the incident, pointed to the train and confessed to being involved in the death. He also admitted to being a schizophrenic who was off of his medication, prosecutors said.

Prayer Vigil Held In Front Of Dallas Police HQ After ‘Heartbreaking’ Week - CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A prayer vigil was held in front of Dallas Police Headquarters Sunday afternoon after a “heartbreaking” week throughout the nation following the in-custody death of George Floyd.

A large crowd could be seen in the area that included leaders like Chief Renee Hall and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

Several pastors from across North Texas joined Bryan Carter, a senior pastor at Concord Church, to pray for justice in the Floyd murder case and to speak out against racism and hate.

They also called for healing for the city of Dallas after a weekend of protests that turned violent at times. Police said businesses were looted and many arrests were made for inciting a riot.

The church leaders told the crowd it’s important to speak up on issues like Floyd’s death or other police-related deaths of black residents.

They said protesting is a powerful tool, but that vandalism and looting doesn’t help the cause.

“When it’s peaceful, we can accomplish great things, but we also believe that violence and vandalism never solves our problem. The real way to solve our problem is for people to protest but also for planned action and strategy behind that as well,” one speaker said.

Speakers continued to pray that any protests planned for Sunday evening would remain peaceful.

Letter: No masking the need to find a middle road - Chico Enterprise-Record

It seems knee-jerk political reaction has divided us, yet again, over The Great Mask Controversy, and whether or not we should open up for business.  It seems many of those on the one side say, “No masks, no closures, no restrictions.”  While the other side wants us all to stay home until Christmas, or something like that.  There doesn’t seem to be much of a rational middle.

But there are tragedies on both sides.  Suicide, potential famine, complete loss of savings, impending economic disaster, are just a few of the affects of long term social isolation.  It is not a little thing.  Those folks who have the funds, or are able to work during this time, may not feel the effects right now, but they will in the near future.

So, for those who think masks are the government’s means to control us, lighten up.  It is clear the government has no idea what to think about mask wearing.  Just keep your germs to yourself. It isn’t like we are asking you to give up straws and plastic bags.

For those of you who can afford to expect us all to stay home until the first of never — we can’t.  We have seen our friends commit suicide.  We have deferred medical care until it is dangerously late.  We have lost our retirement.  We don’t want your charity, we just want to work to try and make up for all we have lost.

Let’s find the middle road.

Common sense from the middle of the middle - GREAT BEND TRIBUNE - Great Bend Tribune

Everything feels so distant, here in the middle of the middle of the country. It’s something to reflect on after the week the nation has experienced: a terrible new milestone in COVID-19 deaths, political outbursts, and riots.

Coronavirus has made it here, but the scale of infection feels so small compared to elsewhere in the country, it hardly feels different from any other flu year.

And, while politics is heating up around the country, here in the middle of the middle, we remain mostly conservative, mostly Republican, and our involvement continues to be focused on local politics, while national politics is simply fodder for social media.

Another man was killed this week by a police officer. This one was caught on video by several witnesses. Some of us have seen the videos, some have not. After reviewing several of them, one can only conclude the treatment George Floyd received was extreme, uncalled for, and his death was unjust.

The rest of the country is erupting, and we do not envy them.

It’s times like these that it’s not so bad to be somewhat isolated in our “social bubble,” but it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that even though these events don’t directly touch our everyday lives, we are still part of what is happening in the world.

The novel coronavirus is real, and some of our neighbors have contracted it, suffered through it, and survived. It’s not a walk in the park, so let’s keep doing what we can to keep ourselves and each other safe. It feels good to be able to interact more, but keep in mind those who have health concerns that prevent them from getting out until there is a vaccine to ward off the disease. There is no call to criticize each person’s individual decisions about mask wearing, hygiene, or who or how many people they feel comfortable being around. We just need to be caring and considerate of others.

There will be an election later this fall. Rather than focusing on which side we choose, let’s support one another in the decision to vote, and make that our cause. If it’s in advance, by mail or in person on election day, let’s all vote, and let the chips fall where they may.

And as for the questions of racism and police brutality, we know what’s right and what’s wrong. Earlier this week, a list circulated on our social media feeds, by Corinne Shutack. It’s full of common sense things we can do, even from here in the middle of the middle, to make the world a better place for all people of all colors. You can find it, (https://ift.tt/2zjRcAq), at Medium.com.

In the middle of the middle, we pride ourselves on common sense. Every day, we can choose to treat one another with justice, dignity and grace. This shouldn’t be up for debate.

Middle school student wins online spelling bee after national competition is cancelled - Yahoo Sports

A middle school student won an online spelling competition after the Scripps National Spelling Bee was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday night, Navneeth Murali, 14, of Edison, N.J. was crowned the winner of the SpellPundit Online National Spelling Bee, a new event created after Scripps was cancelled amid the pandemic. Murali, who has been participating in spelling bees since the third grade, tells Yahoo Life that he was devastated by the news.

“It was a heartbreaking moment for all the [spellers], especially eighth graders like me because we won’t have another chance to compete onstage again,” he says. “[We] have spent thousands of hours preparing for this competition and made so many sacrifices along the way.”

Although this was not Murali’s first virtual spelling bee — or his first time winning a national title — he says competing online did not lesson the experience. “Virtual spelling bees are a different experience, but they offer spellers the opportunity to compete against the nation’s best, while at home,” he says.

SpellPundit was created in 2018 by siblings Shobha, 19, and Shourav Dasari, 16, to help aspiring competitors prepare for school and national competitions, especially without a coach, the pair tells Yahoo Life.

According to the co-founders, there were no initial requirements except for completing one of four written tests, to determine selection for the semifinals and the finals. Of the 280 students that registered, 16 made it to the final round to compete for the $2,500 cash prize. On Thursday night, thousands tuned into the livestream of the event on SpellPundit’s Facebook page.

“I couldn’t have done this without God’s grace and without my mother’s help — she stuck by my side for the last three or four years and helped me harness my spelling potential,” says Murali.

According to Shobha and Shourav, Murali is one of the best spellers in the country. In a statement sent to Yahoo Life, Paige Kimble, the executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, says that she is proud of all the competitors.

“We’re certain they would have shined on our stage this evening and aren’t the least bit surprised that they rose to the top in this competition,” she said. “We know they will excel in any academic endeavor they engage in. Naturally, our hearts go out to all our spellers who had hoped to join us in National Harbor, Maryland, this week. Their dream was to demonstrate their extraordinary knowledge before a national audience of avid spelling bee fans. That wasn’t possible this year due to the unprecedented public health crisis we’re all enduring. Under the circumstances, we’re happy that spellers have been able to find outlets to put to practice all the hard study they’ve done to prepare.”

Livermore Middle School Promotions Going Virtual - Patch.com

Press release from the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District:

May 26, 2020 - Livermore, CA - On June 4th, when 8th graders in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) would normally be lining up at their schools to parade across the stage to receive their promotion certificates, they will be at home, watching their middle school celebration on YouTube. In keeping with the Alameda County Public Health Department Shelter in Place Order, LVJUSD middle school promotions are going virtual this year.

Celebrating the completion of 8th grade has already begun in Livermore. Walk any neighborhood, and you may see lawn signs celebrating the accomplishment of a proud 8th grader. Mendenhall Middle School teachers and administrators made front-yard deliveries of congratulatory signs. Other schools hosted drive-through events at the front of their schools with staff members cheering as students pulled up in cars. Amidst smiles and congratulations, students were handed a sign to decorate their yards at home.

The "Walk & Roll Celebration" at East Avenue Middle School (EAMS) provided a way for students and staff to reconnect, even if for a few minutes. "Seeing my teachers all cheering for me and waving to me was really cool. It made me realize how much I've missed seeing them," said EAMS 8th grader Emma Dawson after driving through to pick up her promotion sign. Mary Harris, parent of 8th grader Brooke Harris, said "Mrs. Hoopes is her PE Teacher and she was excited to be greeted by her first, and she loved seeing everyone cheering her on as we drove up to receive her sign!! There are no words for how happy we all felt." Christensen Middle School Principal Pat Avilla said, "The Christensen teachers and staff miss having students at school every day, so we were very excited to distribute over 250 promotion lawn signs to our 8th grade students. The event was heartwarming and enjoyable for our teachers, students, and parents."

School dismissal because of COVID-19 has created an abrupt pivot in end-of-the-year plans. "We couldn't have predicted that our 8th grade students would be ending their final trimester with us in this way," said Joe Michell K-8 Principal Laura Lembo. "We did our best to create a promotion ceremony that is still meaningful even though we can't be together in celebration."

The promotion slideshow videos will premiere on YouTube on Thursday, June 4th at 7:00 p.m. Families and friends are invited to visit middle school websites to get details of their favorite 8th grader's milestone event. Visit www.livermoreschools.org for additional information.

Big Ten transfer Jared Jones lands at Middle Tennessee - GoBlueRaiders.com

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Men's Basketball has landed another talented transfer from the Power 5 ranks in the 2020 class, as former Northwestern Wildcat Jared Jones signed Friday to join Head Coach Nick McDevitt and the Blue Raiders.

The 6-foot-10, 240 pound forward hailing from Hiram, Ga., played in all 31 games for the Wildcats as a true freshman, earning more than 10 minutes per outing while averaging three points and two rebounds.

He hit his stride in Big Ten play, starting February off with a three-game stretch in which he averaged 10 points per game and logged a career-high 12 points against Michigan on Feb. 12.

"Jared Jones is a big addition to our program," McDevitt commented. "He has a combination of size, skill, versatility and strength that will allow him to be a difference maker for us, and his maturity and leadership skills will serve him and our team very well as we continue to move forward."

Before moving north to NU's campus in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Jones was a Top 10 prospect in the state of Georgia where he led Atlanta's McEachern High School to a perfect 32-0 season and the Georgia Class 7A State title as a senior in 2019.

The Indians finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation by PrepNation and No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps.

"Jared has a very bright basketball future in front of him and our Blue Raider fans will enjoy watching him play," McDevitt added.

Jones joins a signing class that includes Mississippi State transfer Elias King, Charleston Southern transfer Dontrell Shuler and Georgia prep standout Christian Fussell, and gives the Blue Raiders seven Atlanta-area products on the 2020-21 roster.

Louisville protests have focused largely on Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, after Taylor was allegedly shot by police in her own home and died.

Taylor, an EMT, was allegedly shot and killed by Louisville Metro Police Department officers in her apartment on March 13. Plainclothes officers were executing a search warrant in a drug case, according to officials. However, the warrant was allegedly for a man who did not live in the building and who was already in custody at the time of the shooting.

The FBI has opened an investigation into Taylor's death.

On Friday morning, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer (D) urged against any further violence.

"I urge protesters, as Breonna Taylor’s family said tonight, to say her name," Fischer tweeted. "But let’s not see anyone else get hurt. Let’s work together for peace, justice & for Breonna & all of Louisville."

It was initially reported the police were using rubber bullets, but Jessie Halladay with the Louisville Metro Police Department told WAVE 3 news that their officers do not use rubber bullets.

The incident took place as police were reportedly trying to clear the area of large groups of protesters. It is unclear why the police chose to open fire on the reporters.

Will Front Street Become Pedestrian Only? We'll Find Out Monday. - Traverse City Ticker

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

A proposal to make the busiest part of Traverse City's downtown street pedestrian-only and convert State Street to a two-way street for the summer is headed to city commissioners for approval Monday.

The proposal from the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) calls for closing the 100 and 200 blocks of Front Street between Park and Union streets to vehicle traffic, making the core downtown district pedestrian-only. Barricades will be placed at either block end – removable in order to still allow emergency vehicles through – with Cass Street remaining open to north-south traffic. To assist with traffic flow, State Street will be converted to a two-way street between Union and Park streets. Adjustments will be made to State Street’s signage, traffic signals, and street markings to reflect the new two-way direction.

Front Street restaurants and cafes will be allowed to utilize the two parking spaces in front of their businesses to have outdoor seating in a designated cafĂ© area on the street. Restaurateurs will be required to bring their chairs and tables back inside each night. All sidewalks will remain clear to provide business access and ensure clear pathways for individuals with mobility issues. Cyclists will not be able to ride their bikes in the pedestrian zone, but can walk their bikes through the corridor. The DDA also plans to install “parklets” – or placemaking zones with public chairs and tables for people to rest and relax – in certain parts of the district. To direct drivers to businesses outside of the Front Street zone, the DDA plans to invest in signage and banners throughout downtown to alert shoppers to other businesses in areas like East and West Front, Cass, Union, State, and Park streets.

DDA CEO Jean Derenzy says the proposal is intended to provide enough space for downtown visitors to socially distance this summer, and to give businesses – particularly restaurants, who face challenging legal restrictions on spacing and capacity – extra room to operate. “It is important to reiterate: This proposal aims to balance the need of providing a welcoming and engaging environment with the need to provide a safe environment in the face of a global pandemic,” Derenzy wrote in a memo to city commissioners. “This proposal should not be viewed as a typical Friday Night Live, but rather a civic space for people to feel comfortable walking, shopping, and eating with a few placemaking amenities. To that end, Stay Safe to Stay Open is our guiding principle.”

The proposal has undergone several tweaks and refinements since it was first introduced in early May. Derenzy outlined those details in three Zoom sessions this week with downtown business owners and residents, who were invited to share questions and concerns. In response to concerns about how elderly visitors or those with disabilities will be able to access businesses – with many used to being dropped off directly in front of a restaurant or shop – Derenzy noted that the DDA is now increasing the number of handicap and loading zone spaces on cross streets, such as Park, Cass, and Union. Parking times will also be extended in several areas – including 30-minute and two-hour zones – to afford pedestrians enough time to get to and from their vehicles. Several businesses offer rear-alley access for dropoffs, Derenzy said, and the 100 block has mid-block access through the Jay Smith Walkway. The DDA also consulted with the Disability Network on the proposal, in addition to community partners like BATA, Norte, TART Trails, and the Grand Traverse County Health Department, according to Derenzy.

Some downtown residents – such as those living in 101 North Park – worried that the closure of Front Street would drive more deliveries and other traffic to alleys, where residents typically access their own parking. Derenzy pointed out that the city’s ordinance already requires deliveries to take place in alleys – though she acknowledges some companies ignore that rule and make deliveries on Front – and said the DDA would be “monitoring deliveries” to make adjustments if needed. Alley access on the south side of Front will continue to be one-way, alley access on the north side of the 100 block of Front will continue to be two-way, and alley access on the north side of the 200 block of Front will be converted to one-way west (it’s currently partially two-way). Planned downtown bridge reconstruction “is not anticipated to begin until September, so it will not interfere with the closing of Front Street,” says Derenzy.

While the majority of Zoom session feedback was positive, some business owners raised additional questions. Owner Kerry Glaesmer of Votruba Leather Goods opposed the proposal, saying that anytime street closures occur on Front, business plummets. Several merchants asked if smoking could be banned in the pedestrian district, a move Derenzy agreed would be appropriate. Owner Chris Mohrhardt of Pangea’s Pizza asked if the DDA could supply the dimensions of the new street cafĂ© spaces as soon as possible so that businesses could start preparing for the transition. Derenzy tells The Ticker the DDA is working to get those details to merchants. She adds that while there have historically been concerns from owners about street closures – as outlined by Glaesmer – the pandemic is a unique circumstance that calls for outside-the-box thinking.

“This isn’t a status quo year,” she says. “We really need to think creatively about how to help our community.”

The changes to Front and State streets will be made through a temporary traffic control order – a step that would not normally require city commission approval. City Manager Marty Colburn has the ability to sign off on such requests. However, both Colburn and Derenzy said the change was high-profile enough that they wanted elected officials to weigh in. Colburn, who supports the proposal, wrote to commissioners: “While I technically have the authority to approve this, because of the significant change, I wanted to make sure 1) there was public awareness and discussion; and 2) that the city commission supports this concept.”

Commissioners will meet at 7pm Monday to discuss the proposal. If the plan is approved, Derenzy says she expect the changes to Front and State to go into effect either June 15 or 22. The new system would remain in place through Labor Day.

Protesters confront HPD blockade in front of police station - KTRK-TV

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- During a protest and march in downtown over the death of George Floyd, things quickly turned violent.

Mayor Sylvester Turner held a press conference urging Houstonions to hold a peaceful protest.

WATCH LIVE: Mayor Turner addresses protesters in Houston

"Let me just say, as the mayor of this city, people have a right to demonstrate, and they have a right to protest," Turner said. "What I would ask, is for people in Houston to demonstrate decency as they stand up to voice their rhetoric."

A woman was asked to leave the protest after she allegedly took out a rifle.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said he's going to arrest the woman for trying to start a riot during a peaceful protest.

"We demand accountability and justice for black lives in Houston and around this country!" organizers said in a statement. "George Floyd is one of the many victims of police violence and should be alive!"

The crowd marched through downtown to get to city hall, blocking traffic and at times chanting "No justice, no peace" and "Say his name. George Floyd." Many held up signs that said, "I Can't Breathe" and "Justice For George."

WATCH: Thousands gather in streets of Houston to protest police brutality

Eventually the protesters ended up alongside U.S. Highway 59. A group of about 60 to 70 shut down the freeway for at least half an hour.

Houston police accompanied the protesters as they marched for less than half a mile along the freeway before they walked off of it.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said he welcomed the rally.

"We stand with them protesting what happened in Minnesota," said Acevedo. "I'm happy that they're here today because people need to be heard, voices need to be heard."

One of those protesting Floyd's death was 19-year-old Jimmy Ohaz, who came from the nearby city of Richmond, Texas.

"My question is how many more, how many more? I just want to live in a future where we all live in harmony and we're not oppressed."

During the protest, a man was also arrested after many people were caught throwing rocks at police cars.

The event was organized by Houston's Black Lives Matter group after the death of Floyd who was killed at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis on Monday. Floyd died after a police officer was caught on video kneeling on his neck for at least seven minutes.

Floyd said multiple times that he couldn't breathe as dozens of bystanders stood by recording the officers.

Four Minneapolis officers involved in the arrest were fired this week. State investigators on Friday arrested the officer who was seen kneeling on Floyd's neck. The officer has been identified as Derek Chauvin. Chauvin is now charged with murder.

"Whether Mr. Floyd was from this city or not, every city in every state in this country has been impacted by the loss of life, and the way Mr. Floyd lost his life," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said on Thursday.

Violence erupted around the country following Floyd's death, the worst of which happened in Minneapolis. Protestors took over the streets, and looters broke into several businesses.

"I feel a special obligation as a mayor of this city to make sure that, for example, we are doing everything we can within our own organization to improve situations, to make things better," said Turner.
While Houston city leaders have widely condemned the police action against Floyd, including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Police Chief Art Acevedo, rally organizers had a harsh rebuke.

"We ARE protesting you too, @artacevedo, we are not players... we are citizens calling out injustice," Black Lives Matter Houston founder Ashton Woods said on Twitter.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey Addresses City In The Middle Of Night Of Violence - CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — At about 1:30 a.m. Friday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed a city that was battling multiple fires as protests against the death of George Floyd descended into violence once again, at a scale larger than either of the days that came before it.

“Brick and mortar is not as important as life,” Frey said. “The symbolism of a building cannot outweigh the significance of life.”

Frey said that “we are going to be united as a city,” and told the press that he was the one who made the decision, ultimately, to have Minneapolis police officers withdraw from the 3rd Precinct building, citing the danger to both the officers inside the building as well as the public at large.

It was at 10 p.m. that officers withdrew from the precinct as rioters stormed in and set the building on fire. WCCO’s Jennifer Mayerle said her sources told her that there were discussions about ultimately abandoning the building as early in the day as noon.

“There a lot of pain and anger right now in our city. I understand that, our entire city recognizes that. What we have seen over the past several hours and the past couple of nights in terms of looting is unacceptable,” Frey said. “These are businesses, these are community institutions that we need. These are banks that people rely on to get cash, grocery stores that people rely on to get food, pharmacies that people rely on to get medicine … and we need to make sure that they are protected.”

Frey added that the responsibility is also one the whole community shares.

“We additionally need our help from our community. We need to make sure people are looking out for our city right now. We all need to make sure we are standing up for our highest ideals,” Frey said.

Frey also addressed tweets that President Donald Trump posted earlier in the evening, in which he called Frey a “very weak Radical Left Mayor,” and said he would send the National Guard in to “get the job done right.”

“Weakness is pointing the finger at someone else during a time of crisis. Donald J. Trump knows nothing about the strength of Minneapolis. We are strong as hell, and you better be damn sure we’re going to get through this,” Frey responded.

As of 2:30 a.m., it appeared that Twitter had flagged the second tweet in the string, in which Trump said “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” for violating Twitter’s guidelines.

Protestors rally in cars in front of Senator Susan Collins' offices around the state - WABI

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Protestors took to their cars to rally in front of Senator Susan Collins' offices around the state including in Bangor.

They're calling for Senator Collins and Congress to stop what they call pharmaceutical profiteering.

A couple of people who live nearby were mad at the way the protest was taking place.

One man even blocked cars, saying the honking was disturbing his family.

Organizers say they stayed in their cars to protest safely due to the pandemic.

They say pharmaceutical corporations are raising prices on coronavirus treatments - and lobbying for a monopoly on a vaccine.

"We're all for taxpayer money being spent to develop a vaccine. That's a public good. But, right now it's not easy to tell who the money is going to and in what amounts so we believe that transparency is important for accountability,” Sonja Birthisel, Volunteer, Maine People’s Alliance, said.

We received a statement from Collins office Thursday

“Senator Collins, along with the rest of the Maine Delegation, voted to make testing as well as any future federally-recommended vaccine free for those with Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance. “

That legislation is now law.

It also says Collins called for an ACA special enrollment period so anyone without insurance could get it.

Middle-Market Public Policy Roundup - Middle Market Growth

As the effects of the coronavirus pandemic persist, policymakers were worried that the PPP might run out of funding like it had in late April, but borrowing from the program has seen a slight decline in recent weeks. Figures from the SBA last week showed the agency had approved more than $513 billion in loans since March. This week, that number fell to $511 billion.

Despite some signs of improvement, a study from the University of Illinois, Harvard Business School, Harvard University and the University of Chicago estimated that more than 100,000 small businesses have closed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March, now equaling the number of Americans who have died as a result of the disease.

According to Department of Labor figures released Thursday, 2.1 million people applied for unemployment insurance, raising the number of workers who have lost jobs to 42 million.

Small Business Investor Group Says Private Capital Could Alleviate COVID-19’s Knock-on Effects

The head of an industry group representing lower middle-market private equity funds told members of Congress that small businesses will need more flexibility in order to adapt to the new environment, which includes improving access to capital.

Brett Palmer, the president of the Small Business Investor Alliance, appeared before a virtual hearing of the Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship, and Capital Markets on Tuesday. The hearing focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on capital markets, warning of the disease’s knock-on effects.

“We need to remember that we are only experiencing the first wave of impacts of this economic and biological disaster,” he said. “There will be second and third wave impacts that we know are coming and a whole lot more that we don’t yet see.”

Palmer said a part of the government’s response in the next year must include an update to regulations that create barriers to capital for small and medium-sized businesses, which could face high levels of debt and limited access to loans from banks as credit wears thin despite their viability—and hamstring job growth.

Additional flexibility for the Paycheck Protection Program was one of the suggestions Palmer made to lawmakers in addition to helping small businesses get access to private capital.

“Small businesses are going to need even more access to more patient capital or equity,” he said. “They’ll need access to both bank loans and private capital markets, from business development companies, small business investment companies, rural business investment companies and small private equity [firms].”

SEC Adopts Amendments to Improve Financial Disclosures about Acquisitions of Businesses

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced last week that it has voted to adopt amendments to its rules and forms to improve for investors the financial information about acquired or divested businesses, facilitate more timely access to capital, and reduce the complexity and costs to prepare the disclosure.

The amendments will update the agency’s rules, which have not been comprehensively addressed since their adoption more than 30 years ago.\

“This action, which is designed to enhance the quality of information that investors receive while eliminating unnecessary costs and burdens, will benefit investors, registrants and the market more generally,” SEC Chairman Jay Clayton said in a statement.

The amendments to the rules are intended to assist business development companies improve the financial disclosure requirements by altering some definitions and criteria.

The amendments will be effective on Jan. 1, but voluntary compliance will be permitted in advance of the effective date.

New United Airlines CEO Says No To Bankruptcy and Mandating Blocked Middle Seats - Skift

At two previous companies, new United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby developed a reputation for bluntness, often favoring honest answers over diplomatic ones. On Thursday, speaking at his first public forum since taking over last week from Oscar Munoz, Kirby showed he wouldn’t drop the act just because he now leads a Fortune 100 company.

In a 50-minute discussion at the Bernstein 36th Annual Strategic Decisions Conference, Kirby shared his opinions on several issues he’s confronting, including onboard safety, a lack of demand, and mounting debt.

Here are some of the highlights.

No Bankruptcy Filing

The U.S. bankruptcy process permits companies to reorganize and drop their most onerous debts and labor contracts without materially changing their models. In some other countries, including in Europe, an airline that can’t pay its debts often goes out of business, forever.

United capitalized on U.S. bankruptcy law in 2002, reorganizing ahead of its merger with Continental Airlines, but Kirby told analysts he has no interest in filing again, except in the most dire circumstances.

He said he does not like even being asked the question.

“I’ll try to be calm, since I’m on video,” he said. “To me, it’s like the dumbest question possible. We are not going to file for bankruptcy. It would be the absolute last thing to do.”

Bankruptcy could allow United to get out of aircraft leases and labor contracts. But Kirby said it is not worth the costs.

“I can’t imagine why people think that’s a good business strategy,” Kirby said. “People ask me, ‘Is that the right way to restructure the business?’ I don’t think that at all. Zero percent. No chance. It’s worse for shareholders, for creditors, for employees. It’s worse for every constituent that we have.”

Middle Seats

Several U.S. airlines, including Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways, have committed to blocking middle seats until at least July to promote social distancing on aircraft.

At one point, United suggested it would join, but more recently backed away from the promise. Instead, it is trying not to assign middle seats on flights that are not full.

If a flight is booked at more than 70 percent, United is trying to contact customers to tell them it cannot guarantee distancing, and is allowing them to change flights. (Only about 1 percent of eligible customers are taking United’s offer, Kirby said.)

At the conference, Kirby said publicly what other airline executives know but rarely say — it is impossible to social distance on an airplane.

“I’ll try to be careful here,” he said. “You can’t be six feet apart on an airplane, middle seat or not. … What makes an airplane safe is HEPA air filters recirculating the air every two to three minutes, wearing a mask on board the airplane, and cleaning the airplane.”

Low-Point Reached

Several airlines executives have shared that their airlines hit the low point for revenue in April, with business picking up since then. Most executives try to spin that as a positive, but Kirby was more blunt, noting there was nowhere to go but up.

“It’s just mathematical,” he said. “As more time goes by, there’s fewer bookings to be canceled.”

Despite the quip, Kirby said business is improving. On Wednesday, United carried almost 50,000 passengers, up from fewer than 10,000 on two days in mid-April, though far fewer than the airline should be flying this time of year.

“We have long way to go,” he said. “It should be over a half a million. But it’s certainly headed in the right direction.”

No New Airplanes

After the financial recession, many U.S. airlines renewed their fleets, adding new airplanes, often with improved amenities. But that era is now over, Kirby said.

“Beyond the airplanes that we’re already kind of locked in on, I think it’s going to be a while before we’re taking new deliveries,” he said.

In the recent past, United might replace 15-year-old airplanes with newer models, using parts from retired jets for other aircraft. But that’s no longer the prudent financial move, he said.

“The less risky financial decision is to keep the older airplanes,” he said. “I view my job as chief risk manager, particularly as we go through a crisis. That just changes your perspective on new aircraft.”

United is the only one of the big three global U.S. carriers that has not retired a fleet type during the pandemic. It may, but it is too early, Kirby said. He said he prefers to watch to see how demand recovers.

“There’s no upside to doing it today versus collecting some more information and collecting more data, and we can make a better decision, a month from now, or two months from now, or four months from now,” he said.

Domestic Versus International

It has become conventional wisdom the U.S. domestic market will recover faster than long-haul international. Given the restrictions on transcontinental flights, that’s likely true.

But in recent weeks, United’s international system has been performing at least as well as the domestic business, Kirby said, as the airline has capitalized on robust cargo demand.

On Wednesday, he said United flew 48 widebody cargo-only flights to long-haul destinations.

“My guess is that if we ran a P&L [profit and loss statement] for our international versus domestic, international is a better P&L than domestic, which is counterintuitive to what everyone thinks,” he said.
