Letter: No masking the need to find a middle road - Chico Enterprise-Record

It seems knee-jerk political reaction has divided us, yet again, over The Great Mask Controversy, and whether or not we should open up for business.  It seems many of those on the one side say, “No masks, no closures, no restrictions.”  While the other side wants us all to stay home until Christmas, or something like that.  There doesn’t seem to be much of a rational middle.

But there are tragedies on both sides.  Suicide, potential famine, complete loss of savings, impending economic disaster, are just a few of the affects of long term social isolation.  It is not a little thing.  Those folks who have the funds, or are able to work during this time, may not feel the effects right now, but they will in the near future.

So, for those who think masks are the government’s means to control us, lighten up.  It is clear the government has no idea what to think about mask wearing.  Just keep your germs to yourself. It isn’t like we are asking you to give up straws and plastic bags.

For those of you who can afford to expect us all to stay home until the first of never — we can’t.  We have seen our friends commit suicide.  We have deferred medical care until it is dangerously late.  We have lost our retirement.  We don’t want your charity, we just want to work to try and make up for all we have lost.

Let’s find the middle road.
