Livermore Middle School Promotions Going Virtual - Patch.com

Press release from the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District:

May 26, 2020 - Livermore, CA - On June 4th, when 8th graders in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) would normally be lining up at their schools to parade across the stage to receive their promotion certificates, they will be at home, watching their middle school celebration on YouTube. In keeping with the Alameda County Public Health Department Shelter in Place Order, LVJUSD middle school promotions are going virtual this year.

Celebrating the completion of 8th grade has already begun in Livermore. Walk any neighborhood, and you may see lawn signs celebrating the accomplishment of a proud 8th grader. Mendenhall Middle School teachers and administrators made front-yard deliveries of congratulatory signs. Other schools hosted drive-through events at the front of their schools with staff members cheering as students pulled up in cars. Amidst smiles and congratulations, students were handed a sign to decorate their yards at home.

The "Walk & Roll Celebration" at East Avenue Middle School (EAMS) provided a way for students and staff to reconnect, even if for a few minutes. "Seeing my teachers all cheering for me and waving to me was really cool. It made me realize how much I've missed seeing them," said EAMS 8th grader Emma Dawson after driving through to pick up her promotion sign. Mary Harris, parent of 8th grader Brooke Harris, said "Mrs. Hoopes is her PE Teacher and she was excited to be greeted by her first, and she loved seeing everyone cheering her on as we drove up to receive her sign!! There are no words for how happy we all felt." Christensen Middle School Principal Pat Avilla said, "The Christensen teachers and staff miss having students at school every day, so we were very excited to distribute over 250 promotion lawn signs to our 8th grade students. The event was heartwarming and enjoyable for our teachers, students, and parents."

School dismissal because of COVID-19 has created an abrupt pivot in end-of-the-year plans. "We couldn't have predicted that our 8th grade students would be ending their final trimester with us in this way," said Joe Michell K-8 Principal Laura Lembo. "We did our best to create a promotion ceremony that is still meaningful even though we can't be together in celebration."

The promotion slideshow videos will premiere on YouTube on Thursday, June 4th at 7:00 p.m. Families and friends are invited to visit middle school websites to get details of their favorite 8th grader's milestone event. Visit www.livermoreschools.org for additional information.
