NYC middle, high schools could reopen this academic year, report says - silive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- New York City’s middle and high schools, which remain closed due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, could reopen before the end of the school year, according to a new report by PIX11 News.

On Thursday, Mayor Bill de Blasio expressed a glimmer of hope that the city’s older students could return to the classroom before June, with New York’s educators now eligible for the coronavirus vaccine.

Since New York City teachers became eligible for the vaccine on Monday as part of priority group 1b, over 17,000 teachers have signed up to receive the shot, according to the United Federation of Teachers (UFT).

While failing to provide specific criteria for when middle and high school students might be able to return to the classroom, the mayor said that the city will continue to assess the public health risks and consider reopening school buildings.

“If we have a very different health-care situation, we are going to re-evaluate everything and offer people to come back who have been doing remote, but we are not there yet,” de Blasio told PIX11 News.

City Councilman Mark Treyger, chairman of the Education Committee, said that it’s not just about getting people vaccinated, but also about ensuring that there is enough staff to handle kids returning to the classroom.

“I think that that’s one of the biggest reasons why middle and high schools aren’t open, is because of the staffing issue,” Treyger told PIX11 News.

ABOUT SCHOOL CLOSURES

Schools across the city were closed temporarily on Nov. 19 after the coronavirus positivity rate surpassed 3% over a seven-day rolling average citywide, the threshold de Blasio said would trigger a shutdown of all city public schools.

Elementary schools, preschools and District 75 schools, which teach special education students, reopened in December with increased coronavirus (COVID-19) testing.

As of Wednesday, a total of 878 New York City public schools were open, with 247 of them offering five-day-a-week in-person instruction at buildings.

“That means they have effectively gone back to normal for the students who signed up for in-person instruction,” de Blasio said Wednesday. “Now, to put that in perspective, that number of schools, that alone, those 247 schools would constitute alone the eighth largest school district in America. That’s the magnitude of what’s been achieved here in terms of returning to five-day-a-week instruction. And we want to build on that.”

It remains unclear when middle and high schools will reopen, though the mayor has indicated it could happen before the end of the school year.
