SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A massive “Black Lives Matter” mural will take shape in front of city hall this weekend after a downtown law firm got the mayor’s permission, attorney Anthony Marrone said.
The mural will be painted on the street and stretch two blocks east from city hall toward the Marrone Law Firm, Marrone said Wednesday.
He is seeking volunteers, donations and supplies for the effort. The mural will be painted beginning 9 a.m. Saturday. Marrone is still working on an estimate for how long painting the mural will take.
Similar murals have been painted in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere. They take up the full width of the street and are painted in yellow.
Some of the details are still being worked out for the mural here, Marrone said, and the streets are narrower than in the nation’s capital. So it might not look exactly the same, he said.
Marrone was still getting the permit approved from the mayor’s office as of Wednesday morning, though he expected no issues.
He’s also consulting local artists on how much paint and labor it will take, and he is exploring the idea of other murals elsewhere, he said.
Amid the George Floyd protests here and nationally, the firm has committed to spending $50,000 toward minority-owned businesses and on events.
“It is just a symbol. I recognize that. ...But I think it brings people together,” Marrone said.
The mayor’s office did not immediately respond to request for comment.
