Hawthorne Middle-High School launches agri-business magnet - WCJB

HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB)-- The rural city of Hawthorne has a new magnetic connection to agri-business.

The Academy of Agribusiness is Hawthorne Middle-High School's first magnet program. This comes almost two years after Hawthorne's possible closure due to low grades.

The magnet is partnering with University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences to grow crops for school lunches. The program is growing tomatoes, collard greens, lettuce and cabbage. Courses are offered in the business aspect of agriculture along with the chance to learn how to care for cows, goats, chickens and pigs.

John Ford is an agriculture student at HMHS and said the program is thriving. Ford added, "it doesn't take over your whole life but it's still time-consuming because you have to care for the animal. And also have to act like an adult because you have to, you have to...Its responsibility. Responsibility."

Current students in the agriculture program will have their standard curriculum adjusted to the magnet rubric.

The criteria for getting into the magnet are a combination of good grades, a strong interest in agri-business and an application. Any student in Alachua County is eligible but preference will go to Hawthorne students.
