GROVE CITY, Ohio — A teacher at a middle school in Franklin County is facing charges involving sex crimes with a female student that began when she was 14 years old and continued for five years.
Benjamin M. Rutan, 40, of Grove City, is a language arts teacher at Norton Middle School in the South-Western City School District, according to the school’s website. He is charged with two felony counts of sexual battery and one felony count of unlawful conduct with a minor, WBNS Channel 10 reports. He is being held in the Franklin County Jail and is set to be arraigned Thursday, WBNS reports.
WCMH Channel 4 reports that court documents show Rutan is accused of beginning sexual contact with the girl in June 2013. It continued until she was 19.
Rutan was the girl’s teacher, but also was her coach on the basketball and track teams, WCMH reports. Rutan is accused of having sexual contact with the girl multiple times in his classroom, in the school’s parking lot, and in his coach’s office. He also had sexual contact with her in off-campus locations, reports say.
The victim contacted authorities last month and told them about the incidents, WBNS reports. On Dec. 2, she used a recording device provided by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Rutan reportedly admitted to having sexual contact with the victim.
Rutan has been placed on administrative leave by the school district as the investigation continues.
“We are working in full cooperation with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office,” the district said in a statement to WBNS. “As soon as we were made aware of the charges, the district placed the teacher on administrative leave, pending an investigation. The safety and security of our students are our top priority. We will continue to work through our disciplinary and legal processes regarding this matter.”
