Football people say the same stuff

Saturday after the Minnesota Gophers’ 14-6 loss to Illinois, Minnesota Coach P.J. Fleck had these words of optimism for the world:
“Everything is in front of us,” Fleck said, meaning the Gophers can still win the Big Ten West, the Big Ten, and … well, the Big Ten West.
It seemed like I had heard that before recently, and I was correct this time.
“There’s a lot of good things in front of us,” Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said after the Hawkeyes lost to Purdue 24-7 at Kinnick Stadium on Oct. 16. At least he didn’t say everything was, given the unbeaten season had just gone bye-bye.
“Our goals are all in front of us,” Hawkeye quarterback Spencer Petras said that day.
“The reality is everything we still want is right out in front of us,” Iowa State Coach Matt Campbell said last week.
“We’ve got everything we want in front of us,” Michigan guard Zak Zinter said after the Wolverines lost to Michigan State on Oct. 30.
“All our goals are ahead of us,” Michigan State Coach Mel Tucker said Saturday after his team suffered its first loss of the season, at Purdue.
“All our goals are still in front of us,” Pittsburgh Coach Pat Narducci said on Oct. 30 after his team fell to Miami.
Maybe there’s something to it. “Everything we want to accomplish is in front of us,” Western Kentucky Coach Tyson Helton said after his team’s 52-46 loss to UTSA on Oct. 9.
Helton’s team is 4-0 since.
