1 person dead, Pleasant Grove Middle School on lockdown following shooting in Pleasant Grove area of Texarkana, Texas - KSLA

TEXARKANA, Texas (KSLA) — A Texas High School student is dead, another is in custody and a Texarkana area middle school no longer is on lockdown following a shooting Monday afternoon.

The deadly gunfire occurred about 1:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25 on Sidney Drive. That’s where police say they found the 17-year-old dead in the street.

That scene is within a few blocks of Pleasant Grove Middle School, which is located in the 5600 block of Cooks Lane in Texarkana, Texas.

That campus went on lockdown as a precaution when Texarkana, Texas, police reached out to Pleasant Grove ISD just before 2 p.m., a school district spokeswoman said.

“We ask that parents do not come to the school. We are on lockdown. Everyone on campus is safe,” Shelby Akin, marketing and communications director, said at the time.

That lockdown has since been lifted. An update posted on the school district’s website reads:

“Today at 2:00 p.m. the Pleasant Grove Middle School campus went into lockdown as a precautionary measure due to a shooting in a neighborhood near campus. We have been notified by the Texarkana Texas Police Department that the suspect has been taken into custody and there is no additional threat to the area. Pleasant Grove Middle School is no longer on lockdown. Thank you to our local law enforcement personnel and our parents for your support through this event.”

And later, Texarkana Independent School District released the following statement:

“This afternoon, the Texarkana Texas Police Department investigated a homicide on Sidney Drive. Although very early in the investigation, we have come to learn that the deceased and the suspected shooter are both Texas High School students. Additionally, it is believed that this shooting was a carry over from a verbal disagreement which occurred earlier today at THS and which was addressed at the time by staff. This is all the information that we are able to release at this time.

“Through our internal investigation of this incident, we do not see any potential threats or danger to the school or students.

“However, out of an abundance of caution, our plan of action for the remainder of the week is to have increased security presence on campus and to make counseling available to our students and staff.

“We ask that you keep everyone involved, along with our students and staff, in your thoughts and prayers at this time.

“If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.”

Police say the deadly shooting on Sidney stemmed from an argument earlier in the day on the Texas High campus.

Authorities have questioned multiple people, including a possible suspect, an 18-year-old who was taken into custody around 2:45 p.m., according to the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department’s Facebook page.

About 600 students are enrolled in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at Pleasant Grove Middle.

The lockdown did not impact the school district’s other three campuses.
