KANSAS CITY -- The Royals are making two major promotions in their front office for 2022.
Kansas City is promoting general manager Dayton Moore to president of baseball operations and J.J. Picollo, currently the assistant general manager/player personnel, to general manager, Royals chairman/CEO John Sherman announced during a Tuesday press conference.
Several teams have promoted general managers to presidents. Operationally, there’s not expected to be a big change, with Moore still overseeing the organization. Picollo has been involved in much of the Royals’ decision making as Moore’s right-hand man, although now he will be more involved in the entire organization rather than focusing on the Minor League side of things.
Moore is in his 15th full season with the Royals after being named general manager on May 30, 2006. He led the Royals to back-to-back World Series appearances and won the 2015 World Series, bringing a championship to the franchise for the first time in 30 years. Moore’s tenure in Kansas City has been one of the most successful in franchise history.
Picollo will become the seventh general manger in Royals history. He’s in his seventh season in his current role, a position he was promoted to in 2015. He previously served as the Royals’ assistant general manager/scouting and player development, and he joined the Royals front office in 2006 as the director of player development.
This is a move many saw coming this season, with Picollo having more of a hand in Major League day-to-day activities -- like traveling with the club -- than before. Picollo has drawn general manager interest from several other clubs over the past few years, including the Twins, Angels and his hometown Phillies.
Promoting him allows Kansas City to keep him in the organization as it moves into the next phase of its rebuilding efforts -- one that Picollo has helped along by overseeing the development and overhaul of the farm system over the past two years.
