Mt. Pleasant middle school goes virtual over COVID cases - The Morning Sun

Mt. Pleasant Middle School will move to virtual learning amid a COVID-19 outbreak that as of Thursday involved more than 40 students and staff at the school.

District Superintendent Jennifer Verleger informed parents Thursday that the school will close Friday for teacher preparation and move to virtual learning effective Monday. Students are expected to return to the classroom Sept. 27, according to the letter.

The move came the same day that the district reported that the number of cases at the middle school increased another 12, 11 students and one member of staff.

Since Sept. 2, when the district reported three total cases at the school, the number of cases has increased by 47 to a cumulative total of 50. Forty-two have involved students and the remaining five have involved staff.

Also on Thursday, the district reported six new cases at Fancher Elementary, doubling the school’s previous cumulative total and bringing it to 12, all involving students. At least one fifth-grade classroom was placed on quarantine for close contact.

The district also reported its first case at Ganiard Elementary, which involved a student. It also reported one new student case at the high school, bringing its cumulative total number of cases to eight; and two at McGuire Elementary, bringing its cumulative total to 10.

Mt. Pleasant Middle School was not covered by the district’s original masking policy, which only called for universal masking for students 11 and younger. People of that age are not eligible for any of the vaccines approved for use in the United States.

The district’s school board approved that policy during the summer break. A week and a half ago, it adopted a policy requiring universal masking in all of its buildings.

K-12-related outbreaks are currently the biggest source of COVID-19 outbreaks in the state, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services this week reported that most outbreaks are in counties without a mask order.

Central Michigan District Health Department hasn’t issued a K-12 mask order across its six counties — Isabella, Clare, Roscommon, Arenac, Osceola and Gladwin — but supports local districts implementing their own.

Before implementing their district-wide mask order, school board members communicated with Jennifer Morse, CMDHD medical director, and Steve Hall, CMDHD health officer, about their recommendation and why the health department wouldn’t issue a mask order.

The CMDHD officials told the school board members that districts implementing their own mask orders offered a more flexible approach to the issue. In the same document, they shared an Ottawa County health department summary of scientific studies supporting the use of masks to slow the spread of COVID-19.

On Friday, the principal of Shepherd Elementary School sent a letter to parents advising them that masks are required for the weeks starting Monday after that school hit its threshold requiring it under district policy.

Previously, the high and middle school, and Winn Elementary, had reached that threshold.
