MIDDLETOWN — Beman Middle School will open its doors for the first time to students for the 2021-22 school year on the first day of classes Thursday.
“This is an exciting time for our students, their families, and our staff,” Beman Principal Cheryl Gonzalez said in a prepared statement.
Gonzalez is leaving the district later this month. Her last day with Middletown Public Schools will be Sept. 24.
Raymond Byron will be the interim principal of Beman, effective Sept. 26, a press release said. He has worked for Middletown Public Schools since the 2014-15 school year. He was formerly an assistant principal at Middletown High School.
“I’m proud to have been asked to be in this role and part of a great transition team,” Byron said in the news release.
“It’s a great opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” Gonzalez said about her departure. “I have the utmost confidence in Mr. Byron’s ability to lead Beman.”
Gonzalez was appointed as principal at Strong Middle School in Durham. She’ll start her duties Sept. 27, according to the town website.
“Identifying that the transition from middle school to high school can be a stressful one,” according to the district. As interim principal, Byron will “be able to provide students and their families with reassurance and guidance” after years with Middletown High School, the news release said.
Kate Antonucci will become interim assistant principal at the high school Sept. 26, filling the vacancy created by Byron’s move. She has worked for Middletown Public Schools for 13 years.
Antonucci started out as an elementary school social worker, and became the district’s social and emotional learning coordinator in December. “I love Middletown. I’ve been looking to grow professionally, and my heart is here. Being able to stay with the community that I love means the world to me,” she said in the news release.
