Because of an increased volume of positive COVID cases and related quarantines at Cañon City Middle School this last week, officials have elected to temporarily suspend in-person learning.
“Although there is no requirement to do so, we feel it is in the best interest of our staff and students to mitigate any additional spread by closing the building to in-person instruction for the shortened school week of Sept. 7-9,” a letter to parents sent Friday states.
During the three regularly scheduled school days next week – Tuesday-Thursday – the district will implement a remote learning platform for all CCMS students. All other school activities for the week of Sept. 7 will be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.
Students will be expected to check their Schoology account for their Google Meet information according to their daily schedule. Teachers will be posting links to students’ class meeting times and they are expected to log in and participate.
Additionally, the district will have a mobile meal service available at the school to allow parents to pick up multiple “to go” meals for their children. Details on this service will be provided before Tuesday.
“Part of our mitigation efforts during this closure will include extensive cleaning of the building in preparation to resume in-person learning on Monday, Sept. 13,” the letter states. “As we return on Sept. 13, handwashing, continued frequent cleaning, and disinfecting of high-touch surfaces will remain essential strategies to reducing transmission.”
Staff and students who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms and do not have an alternate diagnosis should stay home until an alternate diagnosis or negative COVID-19 PCR test results are received.
“As we continue through this school year, our goal is to continue to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff,” the letter states. “We will continue to monitor and evaluate our COVID-19 protocols and make adjustments based on internal data and recommendations from the Fremont County Department of Public Health and Environment.”
There have been 6,878 positive COVID-19 cases in Fremont County, including cases within the Department of Corrections/Bureau of Prisons. There currently are four active hospitalizations.
The Fremont County COVID-19 Dashboard shows that as of Thursday, there were 21 new community cases.
