Burks Sets MT Record as Blue Raiders Take Third at USA - Middle Tennessee State University Athletics - GoBlueRaiders.com

MOBILE, Ala. – Graduate Student Sophie Burks set a program-record 54-hole total of 205 (68-68-69) Monday, leading the way for the Middle Tennessee women's golf team as the Blue Raiders closed out the USA Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of South Alabama at the par-72, 6,002-yard Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course.

Burks, who got off to a fast start Saturday morning, showed no signs of slowing throughout the three-day weekend. The Alabama native tied her career-low 18-hole round score of 68 (-4) twice, following it up with a 69(-3) to close out the tournament in her home state. The program record-setting performance saw her finish with a tie for third, only four strokes short of first. Her 15 birdies on the weekend led the team.

As a team, the Blue Raiders had a great weekend that saw them score a 56-hole total of 855, only five away from tying the current 850 record set in 2015 at the Johnie Imes Invitational. Middle Tennessee was one of two schools to score three under-par rounds in Mobile, finishing with rounds of 282-286-287.

Graduate student Caroline Caudill was one of MT's two players to finish under-par this weekend with a final 18-round score of 72 (E) to go along with her 69 and 72 from the days prior. Caroline found herself in a tie for eighth after 56. Senior Catherine Caudill was one stroke of par on the weekend after back-to-back rounds of 73 (+1) on Sunday and Monday. Her consistency found her still in the top-20 in a five-way tie for 15th.

Junior Molly Bebelaar finished the USA Intercollegiate tied for 32nd after a 75-73-73 set. Junior Taylor Edilin had her best round with 75 (+3) on day three, ending the weekend tied for 75th in a field of 96.

Senior Madison Smith cut nine strokes off her opening round of 81 (+9), with a 72 (E) on Monday. Her final two rounds (73-72) saw her jump from 90 to 59 on the player leaderboard.

QUOTING COACH ADAMS
"I think it is great to get three under-par rounds and to have two players finish under par and one on par in our first tourney of the season," head coach Chris Adams said. "We came out after a two-hour lightning delay today and played aggressive and made a lot of birdies to finish strong. Sophie had a really good chance to win the tourney and came up a little short but played awesome. Hats off to Sam Houston and South Florida who played very well and we are looking forward to a week and a half of practice before we get back at it with two great tourneys in Knoxville and Franklin."

UP NEXT
The Blue Raiders will resume their season in two weeks as they head to Knoxville, September 20, for the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship hosted by the University of Tennessee.
