DEEP RIVER — A district-wide Regional School District 4 meeting is set for next week regarding a $952,053 security project at John Winthrop Middle School in Deep River.
The school district serves students who live in Chester, Deep River and Essex.
The public hearing will be focused on the recommendation of the Board of Education that funding be appropriated for the project, which will include any federal, state or other grants-in-aid received for the updates, according to the meeting agenda.
The district also anticipates receiving state grants for a portion of the eligible costs, it said.
Funding for the project may be allocated for design, construction, renovation and installation costs, engineering and professional fees, materials, equipment, purchase costs, legal fees and more, according to the agenda.
The John Winthrop Middle School Security Project Building Committee will be authorized to determine the scope and details of the project and may also modify its scope.
The authorization of the issuance of bonds, notes or temporary notes shall be submitted to referendum vote by the electors and citizens qualified to vote in town meetings.
In a presentation from November 2020 by architectural firm Quisenberry Arcari Malik, detailing the security features, improvements would be made to the front entrance of the school. A security vestibule that leads into the building will allow everyone entering the building to be screened.
Some of the security features include door and window sensors, laminate and bullet-resistant glass, security cameras, motion sensors, security stations and more. The project has been in development since 2019, however at the time, the district did not have enough funding to move forward with the project, according to the BOE.
The project’s tentative completion date was this month.
