Celebrating Front Porch Day In Russell | News, Sports, Jobs - timesobserver.com

Back in June, Gary Candriea made a presentation to the ROAR group about Front Porch Days.

Folks sit out on their front porch, or a convenient space in their front yard, and invite folks who are passing by to their front porches for a glass of lemonade and friendly conversation. The Warren community hosted Front Porch Days last year and deemed it a successful activity, promoting neighborliness among Warren folks.

My wife Liz and I liked the idea and decided to participate this year at our home in Russell, about a mile south of downtown on South Main Street. To advertise our participation, I made a lawn sign and set it up by the street several days in advance of the event. I also passed out fliers to folks in our neighborhood on South Main Street and on Ferncliff Drive, inviting them to stop by. Our daughter put the upcoming event on her Facebook page to attract participants from a larger area.

On the day of the event, I collected up all of the lawn chairs in our back yard. My wife had decided that we should offer more than lemonade, so we got some hot dogs and rolls and I moved the grill to the front yard. We each had a rocker on the front porch, which made it easy to talk with folks.

We planned our event for 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday afternoon was sunny and hot. We were ready for folks to drop by at 3 p.m. About 3:15 p.m. friends and neighbors began to arrive. It was hot enough in the sun that we moved all of the chairs into the shade of a convenient tree in the front yard. Lemonade was passed around as conversations started. More friends arrived and conversations continued. Hot dogs were passed around as more friends and neighbors stopped by. Our event lasted until about 7 p.m. and 15 people visited with us.

On Sunday, after church, we invited friends to share lunch with us on our “Tree-shaded Back Yard Patio”. Nine additional folks attended. Again, we enjoyed the company of friends.

While we were hosting out event on Saturday, Karen Martin was hosting guests on her front porch in downtown Russell. Iced tea and chocolate chip cookies were served.

It was a great weekend for friends and neighbors to get together and meet other folks who live in the area. It was a fun event and we will do it again next year!

ROAR

AUGUST 2, 2021

The regular ROAR meeting was held at the township office at 6:30 p.m. Beautification Committee Chair Karen Martin reported that the lillies are on the way out, but marigolds still are in flower. Weeds have been cut.

Priscilla Prowley, chair of the Flags and Banners Committee, reported that the committee has identified some utility poles in Akeley where flags could be flown. Art Sager, canoe/kayak launch chair, said frequent heavy rain storms have made it too difficult to bring heavy equipment to the launch site. Katie

Walker reported that the September 11th ‘ROARIN’ at Larimer program has been set. The Misfits will be performing at Larimer Field in Russell from 6 to 8 p.m. The Russell Methodist Church also will be holding a drive-through chicken barbecue beginning at 4 p.m. until the meals are sold out.

In other business, ROAR is looking for grant funds to purchase a “Welcome to Akeley” sign and a sign for the walking path at Larimer Field.

SUPERVISORS REPORT

AUGUST 18, 2021

Road maintenance and upgrades have been difficult to accomplish this summer because of the frequent rain storms. However, the township has been able to finish all of the asphalt overlays that it had planned for this summer. The following streets have been milled and two layers of asphalt applied: Walker, Maplewood, Beechwood, Shady Ridge, Fox Fire, Conewango and Race. Additionally, Howard Road, Egypt, Townline and parts of Stateline and Cottage have been oiled and sealed.

The township also has sealed the Russell Volunteer Fire Department parking lot and the road at Werner Park. Drainage also has been improved on Peterson Hollow. Remaining on this year’s oiling schedule are: Norberg, Gouldtown and lower Mill Roads.

Once this is complete, repair work will be done on Stanton Hill Road to prepare it for winter, with plans to redo the road next season. The township also has contracted for selective tree trimming on Cidermill Hill and a portion of the Big Four Road.

Plans are moving forward to finish work on rebuilding of the Hultberg Road. This has been a multi-year project funded in part by the Warren County Conservation District. The upper portion of Hultberg Road, from the township line to about a mile from the end of the road, was done two years ago. The remaining portion will be done this fall, which will include trimming of trees overhanging the road, replacing and adding to the road’s drainage system and adding several inches of gravel to the road. Bids are now being solicited for this work. The township also will be completing work on the kayak/canoe launch at Larimer Park soon.

The township has received its first installment of about $132,000 from the American Rescue Plan. At its monthly meetings, the Board of Supervisors routinely discusses possible uses of this money to benefit township residents. Input from residents is welcomed and can be provided to the supervisors at one of their monthly meetings.

However, other than some general information, township supervisors have not yet received specific guidance on permitted uses of the money. Once the town has a prioritized list of possible uses, supervisors will try to find out whether the uses are permitted under the program. The agendas for monthly Board of Supervisor meetings are now posted at the township office and on the township’s website 24 hours in advance of the meeting. The website is https://ift.tt/2Y0cNKt. Emails can be sent to pinegrovetwp@verizon.net. Monthly meetings of the Board of Supervisors are held the second Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the township office on East Street.
