Holly Springs, N.C. — It took two weather delays and a neutral site game, but the Middle Creek Mustangs earned a win over the Holly Springs Golden Hawks on Thursday night to lock up second place in the SWAC.
Senior catcher Jonah Oster's crushed two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Mustangs to a 5-3 win and a secured spot in the 4A state playoffs.
Holly Springs broke through in the top of the first inning with an RBI hit from Brock Wills that made it 1-0 early.
The Mustangs responded in the home half when Chance Chaplin roped a double down the left field line that scored a runner from first to tie the game.
Middle Creek hurler Luke Brown and Holly Springs pitcher Landon Sykes each posted a pair of shutout innings to keep the game at 1-1 after three, but Middle Creek broke through again in the fourth.
A pair of runs on a walk and a wild pitch made it 3-1 Mustangs heading into the first weather delay.
Right out of it, Holly Springs tied the game on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
That was the last scoring until Oster's big home run in the sixth, and Charlie Lytle came in and earned the save by keeping the Golden Hawks off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh.
As the second automatic qualifier from the SWAC, Middle Creek will find out where it will be seeded when the brackets are released on Saturday.
Holly Springs is on the playoff bubble with the loss and third place finish in the conference, and the Golden Hawks will have to wait until Saturday to see if their season will continue.
