Raleigh, N.C. — Middle Creek needed an extra inning to break a tie at Millbrook on Tuesday night, but the Mustangs scored five runs in the eighth inning to claim a 6-1 win in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state playoffs.
Millbrook took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the third when Jake Lane scored off a hit from Mason Roy, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs answered in the top of the fourth though. Brendan O'Connell doubled on a fly ball to the left field, scoring Chace Chaplin to tie the game at 1-1. That tie held through seven innings.
In the top of the eighth, Jonah Oster hit a single to left field, allowing Keagan Leonard to score from third base, giving Middle Creek a 2-1 lead with no outs.
Later in the inning, with one out, Tanner Hunley hit a single on a line drive to center. That hit allowed Mike Venditti to score. Then a ground out by Blayze Leonard scored Daniel Guererro, giving Middle Creek a 4-1 lead with two outs.
The Mustangs weren't done though. Hunley scored on a wild pitch to push the Middle Creek lead to 5-1, then Sam Holt hit a ground ball and reached first base on an error, allowing Bryce Dail to score and push the Middle Creek lead to 6-1.
Millbrook finally ended the inning with a ground out, but the hole was deep for the Wildcats. Luke Brown threw three straight strikeouts to end the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Middle Creek will advance to the second round on Thursday where it will host Purnell Swett.
