How did Voulgaris become an influential voice?
Tim Cato, Mavericks beat writer: When Voulgaris was hired in the fall of 2018, his role was described as an advisory one that focused on big picture analytics. In reality, he had a vision of a spread pick-and-roll offense surrounding Doncic that had won over Cuban, with whom Voulgaris had already established a basketball relationship.
It's like one team source told me: "Mark Cuban is the most powerful person in the organization, but whoever he’s listening to is second." Voulgaris was that person, and most decisions the front office made went through him.
What is Voulgaris' future with the team?
Cato: It's a stretch to say that Voulgaris' vision for the team was wrong, or that all the moves the front office has made over the past few seasons were bad. But Voulgaris frustrated team employees and players throughout his tenure, including multiple incidents with Doncic himself, and the front office is ultimately responsible for the team's two first-round losses the past two seasons. (Doncic himself did more than enough in both series.)
We know that Voulgaris' contract expires this summer, and his future isn't certain beyond that. But it seems more likely he'll depart from the franchise than remain in any capacity.
Why Doncic will garner the supermax
Sam Amick, NBA senior writer: When Doncic was the runaway Rookie of the Year for the 2018-19 campaign, the obvious question that follows all good young players followed: How much better would he get? And then, after some teams had passed on him in the draft because of the belief that he might hit his developmental ceiling at a young age, he got even better. Much better, in fact.
That, in a nutshell, is why Luka has quickly become a supermax type of player. Only five other players in the history of the game have ever averaged at least 27 points, eight rebounds and eight assists per game, with Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, James Harden and Russell Westbrook combining to do it 10 times in all.
Meanwhile, Doncic has done in each of the past two seasons. Add in his ability to dominate in the playoffs, and it all adds up to a well-deserved, and huge, payday that's coming his way.
