Summerlike temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s are expected throughout the week, with chances of showers and thunderstorms before a drop to more normal temperatures late in the weekend, according to forecasters.
There is a slim possibility of scattered showers and light thunderstorms in the inland Chicago area today and Thursday due to moisture in the atmosphere, said meteorologist Brian Leatherwood of the National Weather Service’s Chicago-area forecast office.
Normal high temperatures in early June in Chicago average 78 to 79 degrees, and temperatures over the rest of the week and weekend are expected to be at least 4 to 5 degrees above normal, Leatherwood said.
“That’s going to be the trend even when it starts cooling down a bit, we’re going to be in the ballpark of about a few degrees above normal,” Leatherwood said.
The hottest day is expected to be Friday, with a high temperature forecast to hit about 94 degrees. Areas near Lake Michigan are expected to see more comfortable weather conditions with temperatures in the mid-70s, Leatherwood said.
The record high for June 9 is 98 degrees set in 1911, according to the weather service.

Friday will see dry conditions with temperatures in the same range.
A cold front is forecast to move into the Chicago area Saturday, bringing the possibility of scattered thunderstorms with strong gusts of wind, according to Leatherwood. This will lead to a fall in temperatures to the upper 70s by Sunday, dropping to the mid-70s on Monday and the upper 60s by Tuesday, according to the weather service.
Lows will mostly be in the 60s overnight, according to the weather service.
