Amherst-Pelham Regional Middle School student Nate Squires died on Monday after attempting the TikTok blackout challenge, which invites people to intentionally choke themselves until they are unconscious. Squires was found unresponsive at home on Monday and passed away later, succumbing to injuries.
His family created a GoFundMe page to offset funeral costs. “Our entire family feels like the rug has been ripped out from under us and while Rachel and Dave have a long road ahead of them, the least we can do is try and take away any financial burdens that may face in the upcoming months as they deal with the aftermath of this nightmare,” a family member who created the crowdfundraiser wrote. The page has raised $23,444 of their $25,000 goal at the time of publication. Through the page, the facility also wanted to raise awareness of their experience to prevent further tragedies.
“We ask that if you cannot donate, please reach out to a child in your life and talk to them about the black out challenge,” Squires’ aunt, Samantha Thomas, wrote on the crowdfunding page. “Tell them about the dangers that are out there. Tell them to reach out to an adult if they hear about someone they know attempting it. We hope Nate’s story can help you start this conversation in your home.”
The family also gave permission to the school district to publicize what happened to Squires. As a result, school Superintendent Michael Morris sent emails Monday out to the families of the school community and made a public announcement at a joint school committee meeting.
Morris also reportedly made commitments to support students’ mental health, including adding advisory periods to talk about Squires and an event Thursday evening to support families using Riverside Trauma Center offering both in-person and virtual services, The Daily Hampshire Gazette reported.
