KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officer discovered what he called, “one of the biggest,” Eastern Box Turtles he has ever seen.
“I have found undoubtedly the largest Eastern Box Turtle I’ve ever seen in my life,” Officer Mark Vance said.
Vance compared the box turtle with his baseball cap and said the turtle was at least six inches long and at least 4.5 inches wide. According to Vance, the female turtle was blind in at least one eye.
Box turtles can be found across the entire state. While they are common in Tennessee, officials said populations are in decline. Habitat loss and fragmentation from human development, mortality from cars and collection for pets are putting these populations at risk.
The turtles prefer to stay in moist areas with open forests. Read more about box turtles here.
