MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Marshall softball team fell 6-2 in the final game of the series with the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Sunday.
The Thundering Herd is now 12-8 overall and 1-3 to begin Conference USA play. The Blue Raiders improve to 18-17 overall and 4-4 in C-USA action.
Senior Aly Harrell finished the day 3-of-4 at the plate with a double and one RBI. Fellow senior Armani Brown tallied two hits and scored once. Redshirt senior Blakely Burch scored the other run. Senior Madison Whitaker and junior Mya Stevenson had one hit each. Freshman catcher Kat Sackett recorded her first career caught stealing, throwing out a potential Blue Raider base-stealer in the bottom of the sixth.
Middle Tennessee scored the first five runs of the game before Marshall finally put up two in the fifth. Burch reached on a hit-by-pitch, the 26th of her career as she is now tied for seventh all-time in program history with Sara Spenia (2003-06). Burch later stole second and then took third on a single from Brown, who used some head's up base-running to take second on the throw home, however Burch had stopped at third. Junior Grace Chelemen hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Burch and then Brown took third on the throw home. Harrell then doubled to left that brought Brown home.
The Herd had a little momentum on its side in the bottom of the fifth as freshman pitcher Brianna McCown recorded two strikeouts to help strand two runners on base. However, the Blue Raiders scored one more in the bottom of the sixth to take a four-run lead.
Brown reached on a one-out single in the seventh, after fouling off six-straight pitches, but was unfortunately stranded at first as the Marshall bats could not find the timely hit.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Blessin had the start in the circle and pitched the first 2.2 innings and took the loss. McCown came on in relief in the bottom of the third and pitched the rest of the way.
Marshall returns to action Friday through Sunday, April 16-18, as the Florida Atlantic Owls come to Dot Hicks Field for a four-game series. Friday is a single game scheduled for 1 p.m. The Saturday doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and the last game is Sunday with first pitch at 12 p.m.
