Middle Tennessee scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to come away with a 4-2 victory over South Alabama on Sunday at Stanky Field.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders took the weekend baseball series two games to one. The Jaguars fall to 6-5 this season.
On Sunday, South Alabama tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Michael Sandle’s RBI single. However, Middle Tennessee got to Jaguars reliever Jackson Boyd (1-1) for two in the top of the 10th.
Jake Hagenow and Bryce Smylar ripped back-to-back doubles to start the inning and put the Blue Raiders up 3-2. After Smylar stole third, Luke Vinson squeeze bunted him home to give MTSU a two-run lead.
Trent Siebert retired South Alabama in order in the bottom of the 10th for his first save. David Zoz (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the second straight day despite allowing the tying run.
“This team does have character,” South Alabama coach Mark Calvi said. “We have some older guys and they showed a lot of fight, but it also says we need to do more early in the game too. Through six innings we had three hits, and I give their guy credit. He was good, but not three hits good. We have some guys who aren’t quite swinging it well, some of our better guys that need to start swinging it better. I told the guys after the game that we are close.
“Pitching has given us an opportunity in pretty much every single game we’ve played, and our offense and defense need to be a notch to two notches better, especially late in ballgames. I give our guys credit for fighting back and hanging in there, but we need to do more early on in the game so we’re not put in that position.”
Both of Sunday’s starters pitched exceptionally well. South Alabama’s JoJo Booker allowed only a pair of unearned runs on three hits in eight innings, while MTSU’s Zach Keenan surrendered just Reid Powers’ seventh-inning solo homer in 7 2/3 innings.
South Alabama hits the road for a single game at Alabama at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before returning home to host Jacksonville State for three beginning Friday.
