Sonoma Ranch offers slice of Middle America - mySA

Sonoma Ranch, a neighborhood located in Helotes, just outside San Antonio, is a hot commodity for those looking to buy a new home – with its appealing selling points like great schools and easy access to the city.

Information from the Sonoma Ranch Homeowners Association indicates the area encompasses more than 1,200 residential homes, with the neighborhoods featuring pools, parks and landscape reserve areas.

Dave Howell, a broker at Clover Properties LLC, is something of an expert on the Sonoma Ranch neighborhood, having lived there himself for more than a decade.

People want to live there because of its convenient location and wonderful Northside Independent School District schools, he said.

Elementary students in Sonoma Ranch attend Bob Beard Elementary School and middle school students are zoned to Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School. High schoolers in the neighborhood will attend top-rated Louis D. Brandeis High School.

He said the parks and pools dotting the neighborhood are a real perk – but so are the clubhouses, sporting facilities, and outdoor greenery for excursions. Houses also tend to maintain their value.

Economic opportunities abound in the area, with corporations like American Funds, Citibank, QVC Network and Valero located close by.

And, Howell added, there’s always something to do near Sonoma Ranch.

“The location has access to [shopping at] the Rim and La Cantera, within a few miles, and it’s close to Sea World and Six Flags,” he said. “So it has many attributes in terms of a key location, and as I mentioned, the schools are exemplary and always a draw.”

And Sonoma Ranch is only about 23 miles from downtown San Antonio, Howell noted, but it’s “easy access” as you pull out of the neighborhood and within a mile are on Texas State Highway Loop 1604 headed east or west. And it’s only a quick drive to necessary community fixtures like Walmart, Sam’s Club, H-E-B and Target.

“You connect to I-10 within a few miles,” he said. The San Antonio Medical Center is also close at hand.

Howell added that Sonoma Ranch is made up of many different smaller communities ranging from The Arbors, a neighborhood where homes start in the $200,000 range, to neighborhoods where homes are worth several million dollars.

“So there’s a place to live for almost everybody in Sonoma Ranch,” he said.

Sonoma Ranch also features plenty of undeveloped land for sale, with lots priced beginning at $150,000.

Howell said when he lived in the area, as an “empty nester,” he loved that it was “striking distance” to go anywhere for fun.

“It’s also a great place to walk around, because Sonoma Ranch has trails and nice sidewalks throughout,” he said. “People are always outside.”

It’s easy to get to such lovely outdoor spaces as Ranch Diana and Medallion Park, often enjoyed by local cyclists.

Howell added that the community is also bordered on the north by Cedar Creek golf course, and for the avid golfer, the Palmer Course at La Cantera isn’t far away.

Howell said another unique feature of Sonoma Ranch that appeals to families its low crime rate.

“We have a Neighborhood Watch program in all the neighborhoods, and they come and talk once a year,” he said, noting that while some neighborhoods in Sonoma Ranch are gated and some are not, each neighborhood has a Neighborhood Watch association specifically assigned to them.

Many families with young children live in the area, Howell said, largely because of the great schools. They can enjoy numerous parks and pools in the community, while their parents may enjoy one of several nearby gyms in Helotes.

If Howell had to use three words to describe the area, they would be “location,” “access,” and “price,” he said. “It’s a convenient place to live,” Howell added. “It’s representative of Middle America, if you will.”
