Thanks to warming temperatures and the weekend’s rain, ice on the lake at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area at Kleinfeltersville is disappearing fast and numbers of snow geese at lake are booming.
Lauren Ferreri, manager at Middle Creek, counted about 40,000 snow geese there on Monday. That was the largest number this year and “the first time this year that snow goose numbers surpassed 10,000.”
A winter-imposed delay in the start of the northward migration by snow geese appears to have put the birds on a later schedule than they follow in most other recent years.
The record for the Pennsylvania Game Commission site on the Lancaster-Lebanon county line was set at 200,000 on February 21, 2018. Other recent peaks were 125,000 on February 21, 2020; 150,000 on March 12, 2019; more than 70,000 on February 22, 2017; and more than 65,000 on February 29, 2016.
Many of the snow geese and tundra swans that gather in incredible numbers at Middle Creek have wintered south of Pennsylvania and are beginning their migration north to their breeding grounds, following the spring thaw.
Their stop-over at Middle Creek varies with winter/spring conditions. In a year with an extremely late thaw, the big waterfowl might pass right by Middle Creek, pushing themselves to meet the critical time for nesting in the north.
The snow goose is one of the world’s most abundant waterfowl species.
Acknowledging that the build-up in snow goose numbers at Middle Creek will attract large numbers of people wanting to witness the spectacle, Ferreri urged potential viewers to “view the 2021 Migration Overview video here for closures and safe viewing tips.”
She also suggested, “Try visiting during the week, in the morning, or check out other viewing areas besides the ever-popular Willow Point Trail.”
