New research from the Federal Emergency Management Agency shows the next earthquake along the Wasatch Front could be among the most catastrophic the United States has ever seen.
The fault poses one of the greatest threats to the United States, according to a report released Thursday from FEMA.
Researchers say Utah has a 43% chance of experiencing a 6.75-magnitude earthquake or higher in the next 50 years.
Experts project this type of event would be one the deadliest disasters in U.S. history.
They predict a 7.0-magnitude earthquake would result in thousands lives lost and tens of thousands of injuries.
They estimate 2,750 deaths, up to 10,000 injuries resulting in hospitalizations, and roughly 78,000 people displaced.
They also reported that housing and construction is a large part of the problem.
According to FEMA, more than 140,000 buildings across the Wasatch Front were built before they were prohibited in the 1970s.
An emergency kit is the best tool for preparedness, according to local experts, specifically a flashlight and extra pair of shoes.
