A COVID-19 case was reported in a Damascus middle school on Friday, four days after county schools reopened for students in special education and career and technical education programs. It is the first reported MCPS case since schools reopened.
The principal of John T. Baker Middle School announced on Friday that a staff member tested positive for the coronavirus.
Principal Louise Worthington wrote in a letter to students’ parents and families that the staff member, who is not identified as student or staff member, was last in the school building on Tuesday.
Students and staff members who were known to have direct contact with the person were contacted and advised to quarantine for 14 days.
Worthington wrote that unless parents or family members were contacted directly, students do not need to be tested or quarantined.
The school system considers direct contact to be within about 6 feet of an infected individual for a prolonged period of time, such as being in the same office or classroom, or being coughed on.
Direct contact does not include being on the same floor or in the same building as the person who tested positive.
Worthington advised families to monitor their children for COVID-19 symptoms, which include a fever, cough and shortness of breath.
“If your child develops any of these symptoms, do not send them to school. … Students who develop symptoms, or test positive for COVID-19, will not be able to return to the building until they are medically cleared,” she wrote.
