What Show Is WandaVision Episode 6 Based On? Malcolm In The Middle References, Decoded - menshealth.com

  • WandaVision episode 6 takes its sitcom madness into the '90s and 2000s, portraying a show with a recognizable sense of humor—and even more recognizable opening sequence.
  • The episode features not only key stars Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany), but also a slightly-off version of Pietro Maximoff (Evan Peters).
  • We know exactly what sitcom WandaVision's Episode 6 is based on.

As WandaVision has traveled through the decades, its sitcom references have spanned from early black-and-white episodes paying tribute to The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy, and Bewitched to more recent episodes paying tribute to '80s classics like Family Ties. Now, as the show gets into its stretch run, the shows lampooned are starting to be a little more recent—and maybe a little more recognizable to younger viewers. Episode 6 speeds the pace up, removes the laugh track, and features an intro sequence that should look very familiar to anyone who gets the reference.

Well, it shouldn't be too much of a mystery. In a January interview with Men's Health, Paul Bettany—who plays Vision—specifically mentioned Malcolm in the Middle as a show WandaVision was paying tribute to—and one he needed to brush up on a bit. "I knew a lot of those shows already—Bewitched, and so forth, and Brady Bunch, and Family Ties," he said. "It’s really, when we started getting into the ‘90s, and Malcolm in the Middle, and Modern Family stuff, I’m less familiar with."

But even if you don't want to take the word of Vision himself, there are plenty of hints as to what show WandaVision episode 6 is based on.

WandaVision Episode 6 is—mostly—based on Malcolm In The Middle.

It's clear from the episode's intro sequence that Episode 6 of WandaVision—colloquially called "All-New Halloween Spooktacular!" and informally called "the '90s/2000s episode"—that the episode is primarily based on the FOX sitcom Malcolm In The Middle. That show aired from 2000 to 2006, running for 7 seasons and 151 episodes.

The fonts are the same, the sequences are largely the same. Look at the comparison below between WandaVision's title card for Pietro (Evan Peters) and Malcolm in the Middle's title card for star Frankie Muniz.

The WandaVision sequence also features a bunch of familiar "sitcommy" moments—Tommy and Billy messing with Agnes may not be a specific reference to anything, but just feels very of the genre.

As if the intro sequence wasn't enough, the opening moments find Wanda's Twins, Billy and Tommy Maximoff, talking directly to the camera, just like Malcolm does in Malcolm In The Middle.

And if Tommy and Billy are in the roles of Malcolm, that means that our stars Wanda and Vision are in the star roles of Malcolm's Mom (Jane Kaczmarek) and Dad (Bryan Cranston), who were so great throughout that show and brought so many laughs.

Check out the comparison between the WandaVision opening sequence and the Malcolm in the Middle opening sequences (both with very electric theme songs, it must be said):

The style of the show feels very Malcolm in the Middle too. Think about the flashback sequence where we see a Halloween memory from Wanda and Pietro—one that she doesn't quite remember, but that's a different story—it cuts away in a very quick Malcolm or Arrested Development or 30 Rock sort of manner.

Now, Tommy and Billy don't talk to the camera all episode. It's WandaVision, not a regular sitcom, so weird stuff is still happening. And we're still going back and forth between Wanda's sitcom world and the reality that Monica, Jimmy, and Darcy are caught up in. But as far as the sitcom stuff goes, the inspiration of Malcolm In The Middle certainly feels clear.
