Patrick Surtain II thrilled to play in front of father in Miami - 247Sports

Patrick Surtain II has one more collegiate game for Alabama before presumably heading to the NFL for April’s draft. At this rate, he’s following in his father’s footsteps of professional football but might even be a better prospect.

Surtain’s father was drafted in the second round (No. 44 overall) by the Miami Dolphins back in 1998. Now, Surtain II returns to Miami for the site of the national championship game against Ohio State.

Speaking with the media this week, Surtain II reflected on his father’s playing days and growing up following his path in football.

“I can remember him playing since I was in my earliest youth days,” Surtain said. “But he's taught me a lot about football, even more about football, afterlife of football. He taught me a lot of things going into the game. I just carried and learned from him, and just going back home, he's going to be there. I'm just looking forward to impress him. I know they're going to be happy to see me. I'm going to be happy to see them. It's going to be a great moment.”

As far as Miami is concerned, Surtain can vividly remember his father playing for the Dolphins for seven seasons before heading to the Kansas City Chiefs for four years.

“Well, I would say that I remember certain things when he was playing for Miami, like him making plays,” Surtain said. “They also had a great defense back then, with him, Jason Taylor, Sam Madison, Zach Thomas, all those guys. I just remember him making plays out there, having fun, but also just knowing what it took to get here. It's a blessing, honestly, but just looking forward to this game.

“Remembering the semifinal game, I just remember being a freshman out there, having fun, just winning the Orange Bowl. I just look forward to the game ahead.”

In 12 games this season, Surtain had 34 total tackles, 20 solo tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, eight pass deflections and one touchdown.

Former coach Urban Meyer addressed how Alabama’s defense could play against Ohio State this coming Monday, which includes stellar “technique.”

“...With Alabama, you are going to see minimal pressure on first down,” Meyer said. “Great technique with very good players, obviously, but they play with great effort. And here's what they do well: they take your five best run plays and your five best pass plays and take them away. They are so tendency oriented. It's very important to have complementary plays to your base plays because if not... they are stopping you."
