House Impeachment Vote Could Take Place By Middle Of Next Week, Assistant Speaker Says - Forbes

Topline

House Democrats could bring articles of impeachment up for a vote “as early as mid-next week,” Assistant House Speaker Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) told CNN Friday morning, as House Democrats move quickly to punish President Donald Trump for inciting his supporters’ siege of the U.S. Capitol building in the waning days before President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

Key Facts

House Democrats began circulating draft articles of impeachment Thursday, Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) reported, as a growing number of lawmakers said they would support impeaching the president for a second time.

Clark told CNN Friday that if Vice President Mike Pence refuses to remove the president via the 25th Amendment, “then we will move forward with impeachment to do just that.”

“Every day” that Trump remains in office “is a grave danger,” Clark said, so the House plans to use “procedural tools” to bring articles of impeachment to the House floor “as soon as possible,” skipping the traditional lengthy hearings.

Clark said that would be as soon as the middle of next week, as the House does “have a process we have to go through.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters Thursday impeachment was “urgent” and “an emergency of the highest magnitude,” and CNN reports Democrats are considering using a process that would enable articles of impeachment to be brought to the House floor “within two days.”

Once an official resolution on impeachment has been offered, a vote would take place within 48 hours, CNN notes.

Key Background

Trump’s handling of Wednesday’s seizure of the U.S. Capitol building by a mob of the president’s supporters has been roundly criticized by both parties, spurring a wave of White House resignations, reported discussions of invoking the 25th Amendment among his own Cabinet members and denouncements by longtime allies like former U.S. Attorney General William Barr. “Orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable,” Barr told the Associated Press Thursday, while former White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah told CNN Friday Trump should resign over his response to Wednesday’s events. Democrats’ decision to push forward with impeachment comes as hopes of removing the president through the 25th Amendment have appeared to dim, as reports suggest Pence is opposed to the effort.

What To Watch For

House Democrats are expected to discuss their impeachment plans in further detail during a full-caucus call scheduled for 12 p.m. Friday, CNN reports.
