Who’s the Front-Runner? 5 Takeaways From the First Mayoral Debate - The New York Times

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

Questions about the Yang campaign’s treatment of women and Citigroup’s role in the mortgage crisis created moments of friction among the New York City contenders.

Most mayoral debates in New York City — or anywhere, for that matter — do not get disrupted by cellphone calls. Twice.

But everything about this year’s mayoral race is different, and that applied to the first advertised debate of the campaign on Sunday evening.

The one-hour debate, sponsored by the Kings County Democratic County Committee, was a virtual affair, with eight candidates on Zoom parrying questions from one another, but mostly from Errol Louis, the NY1 anchor and a seasoned debate moderator.

The virtual layout allowed viewers to see candidates’ facial reactions to rivals’ responses, with some more visibly impressed than others. Viewers also saw the array of Zoom backgrounds: Four candidates sat in front of ample bookcases, two had campaign signs visible and one had a child’s artwork hanging.

It was more of an enhanced forum than a traditional debate, but there were still a few moments of friction.

Some highlights:

Debates for higher office often follow a prescribed format: The challengers lunge at the presumptive front-runner in an effort to take the favorite down a notch.

Sunday evening’s debate, however, relegated such candidate-on-candidate lunging to a rather polite and orderly 20-minute session, where the eight candidates each asked one question of the rival candidate of their choosing.

One might expect that the two candidates with the most campaign money — Scott Stringer, the city comptroller, and Eric Adams, the Brooklyn borough president — or the candidate attracting the most social media buzz, Andrew Yang, would have been the prime targets for their rivals.

Instead, the questions were spread widely, suggesting that there was not yet a defined favorite in the field.

Mr. Yang, Mr. Adams and Raymond J. McGuire, a former Citibank executive, took the sharpest questions, but they were allowed to answer without interruption or follow-up.

Maya Wiley, a former counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio, usually adopts a sympathetic demeanor when participating in mayoral events. But on Sunday she confronted Mr. Yang about a Business Insider report detailing his presidential campaign’s treatment of female staffers and volunteers.

She said that she was appalled that in the #MeToo era, and years after Donald Trump’s “Access Hollywood” tapes, Mr. Yang had run a campaign whose culture was characterized as “very harassing and demeaning for women.”

“As a civil rights lawyer, I was shocked to hear that you have a nondisclosure agreement that sounds very Trumpian,” she said, referring to a New York Daily News article about his campaign’s use of confidentiality agreements. “Will you commit to allowing your campaign staff to complain publicly about workplace misconduct?”

Mr. Yang did not directly address the culture of his presidential campaign, saying only that he had employed many women in leadership positions at his nonprofit group and the private company that he oversaw, as well as on his mayoral campaign. He added that he has discontinued the practice of requiring nondisclosure agreements.

“We have absolutely nothing to hide,” Mr. Yang said. “And I’m on the record as saying that everything works better when you have great women leaders.”

In 2009, when the United States was dealing with the repercussions of a subprime mortgage crisis, Shaun Donovan was running President Barack Obama’s housing department. Mr. McGuire was at Citigroup, helping manage its global investment banking arm.

Now both are running for mayor, and on Sunday, Mr. Donovan had a question for Mr. McGuire.

Noting that the mortgage crisis disproportionately affected Black families, Mr. Donovan asked Mr. McGuire to talk about the cause of the mortgage crisis and what he did at Citi at the time, given that the bank “played such a central role in the foreclosure crisis.”

Mr. McGuire responded with apparent pique, referring to Mr. Donovan as “Shaun Obama” and distancing himself from the arm of his bank that packaged mortgage-backed securities.

“I think you know something about finance,” Mr. McGuire said. “You know that I worked in investment banking for 40-some-odd years, which is different to where the crisis occurred.”

One year ago, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams urged some New Yorkers to “go back to Iowa,” a message that stoked controversy at the time — which Loree Sutton, Mayor de Blasio’s former veterans’ affairs commissioner, sought to revive on Sunday.

In his original speech, at the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network on Martin Luther King Day last year, Mr. Adams lamented that crises were only identified as such when they afflicted privileged groups. He extolled New Yorkers who had stood by New York City when crime was high and Starbucks cafes were scarce.

He said newcomers “are not only hijacking your apartments, and displacing your living arrangements, they displace your conversations and say that things that are important to you are no longer important.”

“Go back to Iowa,” he said. “You go back to Ohio. New York City belongs to the people that was here and made New York City what it is.”

On Sunday, Ms. Sutton asked Mr. Adams if he stood by those remarks: “If you were to become mayor, would your message to all New Yorkers be different?”

Mr. Adams, a former police officer who is running as a business-friendly candidate who understands working-class New Yorkers, stood by his original statement.

His message, he said, was intended for “those who overwhelmingly call 911 on Black men just for walking down the block.”

The debate was mired in controversy even before it began — leading to an on-again, off-again boycott that evaporated for all but one candidate.

Lori Maslow, a district leader from the Marine Park neighborhood of Brooklyn and a party vice chairwoman, made anti-Chinese and anti-Palestinian comments on social media. Calls for her dismissal erupted.

The controversy was part of a broader civil war pitting longtime stalwarts against newer reformers in a party closely allied with Mr. Adams. To many, Ms. Maslow, whose husband, Aaron, is now secretary of the party committee, represented the old guard. Newer members saw the party’s reluctance to force her out as emblematic of the organization’s entrenched ways.

Petitions mounted, and candidates — including Dianne Morales, a former nonprofit executive, Mr. Stringer and Mr. Yang — bowed out. But on Thursday, Ms. Maslow, who had earlier resigned from the vice chairmanship, resigned from the district leader position, too.

The candidates who had joined the boycott said they would in fact participate — all but one.

On Sunday, just hours before the debate was to begin, Ms. Morales, who is running to the far left in the Democratic primary, announced she was still dissatisfied with the Brooklyn Democratic Party’s actions surrounding Ms. Maslow.

The “Brooklyn Democratic Party participated in bad faith politics instead of listening to the wishes of the people,” Ms. Morales said. “Racism and hate cannot be tolerated, and recognizing that true accountability hasn’t taken place, I do not wish to reward inaction.”

Ms. Maslow did not respond to requests for comment. In her resignation letter, she cited threats to her safety. Sabrina Rezzy, the spokeswoman for Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte, the Kings County Democratic chair, declined to comment on Ms. Morales’s statement.

But reform-minded members of the Kings County Democrats hailed Ms. Morales’s move.

“The core toxicity and real issues with the Brooklyn Democratic Party still exist, even with Lori Maslow’s resignation,” Jesse Pierce, a Democratic district leader, said.

PFF: Arizona Cardinals 2020 draft class value near middle of pack - Arizona Sports

(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)

The success of a franchise is greatly affected by the impact and production they get out of their draft picks.

No matter where a player is picked, finding value above expectation can set franchises apart.

For example, if a player taken in the first round and a player taken in the fifth round have similar seasons, a team got more value out of the fifth-round pick’s production. This is calculated through the Wins Above Replacement (WAR) for each position in the draft.

Using that metric, Pro Football Focus and ESPN compiled a ranking of all 32 NFL teams based on the value of their rookie class.

Landing at No. 20 were the Arizona Cardinals.

Only three Cardinals rookies played more than 50 snaps, one of which was eighth overall pick Isaiah Simmons.

Simmons made a name for himself at Clemson as one of the most versatile defensive players college football has seen. Simmons’ usage in Arizona wasn’t nearly as diverse as it was with the Tigers, but he played considerably well when dropping into coverage.

The linebacker ended his rookie campaign with 54 tackles, two sacks, an interception, two passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He played all 16 games.

The No. 8 overall pick recorded a 69.9 coverage grade that ranked 19th among all off-ball linebackers. His tackling was also superb; he had just four misses on 49 total attempts.

Outside of Simmons, the only other Arizona rookies to record at least 50 snaps were fourth-round picks Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence.

Both Fotu and Lawrence produced sub-50 grades last season. The two combined for 20 tackles, five of which were for losses, in limited playing time last season. Fotu also added a sack.

The Cardinals 2020 draft class ranked last in the NFC West in WAR rankings, as the Seahawks ranked 18th, the Rams 11th, and the 49ers 10th.

Current 49ers receiver and former Arizona State Sun Devil Brandon Aiyuk was the highest-graded rookie in the NFC West, earning an 80.1 overall grade.

Aiyuk was one of the five most valuable rookies in the 2020 class and was one of the 25 most valuable receivers.

This TikTok Trend Reimagines Front Row Fits - Vogue

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com
TikTok: Courtesy of @wisdm8

This week was Haute Couture week, which would normally mean star-studded front rows and endless street style galleries. However, most of the presentations were displayed virtually this season, so those guests were mostly absent. It was a shame: Half the fun of fashion week is looking at the stylish attendees! But not to worry: TikTok stars filled in the gaps. On the app, creators posted their best front row-worthy fits this week, as though they were at the shows—and they completely dressed the part of a VIP at Prada, Gucci, and more.

The TikTok trend seems to have been ignited by creators such as @evelilythrifts and @andoej earlier this month. Set to Britney Spears’s “Gimme More,” they posted their best front row-inspired outfits, dressing to the theme and aesthetic of each label that they were “attending.” @andoej’s take on being a Saint Laurent guest, for instance, included an all-black fit with slouchy boots; @evelilythrifts’s Gucci-inspired ensemble was whimsical and all pink, complete with a ruffled white top, a beret, and even socks-and-heels (Alessandro Michele would definitely approve). During Couture week, the trend gained even more momentum.

Wisdom Kaye, TikTok’s best-dressed guy, offered his take on the trend just a few days ago: Our favorite look is his take on Rick Owens show attire, complete with a blue puffer and staggering platforms (a Rick signature). Nava Rose took on Chanel (a white lace blouse), Fendi (monogrammed pants), Versace (a slinky LBD), among others. Creator @akacuji took things to the next level with a vintage version of the trend, decking himself out only in secondhand pieces (his 2000s J’Adore Dior tee for his Dior front row fit? Perfection). If anything, this fun, developing trend proves that you don’t need to be at a fashion show to dress up—your at home look can be just as paparazzi-worthy.

Below, more standout TikTok posts taking on the front row trend.

Sunny and Mild To Start The Week with A Cold Front To End The Week - KWTX

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

We’ll have another nice sunset this evening, but temperatures cool off quickly afterwards.  We’ll get to the upper 40′s by 7pm, with overnight temperatures in the upper 30′s.  We start Monday in the low 30′s, but sunshine will help get us into the low 60′s again during the afternoon.  Sunshine and highs in the low 60′s still stick around for Groundhog Day, but after that we get to enjoy highs in the low 70′s on Wednesday.

The southerly winds on Wednesday will come from our next disturbance, which will bring cold front into the area Thursday night.  We only get a few spotty showers from this front, but temperatures will drop from the upper 60′s Thursday afternoon to the mid 50′s Friday afternoon.  Sunny and Mild weather returns next weekend with another small rain chance as we head into the following week.

Sunday Weather: A refreshing change after that cold front blew through - KTRK-TV

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- It was a gorgeous Sunday with lots of sunshine and mild afternoon temperatures. Winds were also a bit breezy today but are expected to decrease this evening into the overnight hours.

What can we expect Monday?

Sunny skies continue into Monday. We may see some high clouds at times but it shouldn't dampen the sunshine much. We will start off the day cold with lows in the low to mid 40s. High temperatures tomorrow should rise up into the low to mid 60s.

How long will the sunshine last?

Sunny skies will remain in the forecast through Tuesday but cloud cover starts to move back in Wednesday as winds shift back in from the southeast.

Are there any cold fronts on the way?

Our next cold front is expected to move in late Thursday into Friday. This front should drop temperatures back down into the 60s and could also bring us a chance for a few scattered showers. A stronger cold front is expected to move in over the weekend.

Front on the way tonight; Slightly cooler and nicer Sunday - KATC Lafayette News

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

A cold front will be sweeping through later tonight helping to deliver on some scattered, light showers.

The showers that move through will be light in nature and essentially just enough to wet the ground.

Pretty great sleeping weather if you ask me!

All of the heavy precipitation and severe weather will remain well off to our north.

Some linger shower activity will be possible at daybreak tomorrow morning, particular for SE portions of Acadiana.

Otherwise, most of us will already be dry as the skies begin to clear.

After some early morning cloud cover, expect mainly sunny skies throughout the rest of your Sunday.

It will be slightly cooler behind the front.

ICAST Next 48 Hour Temps Rob.png
katc winds/temps

Lows will only drop back into the upper 50s to lower 60s, but afternoon highs will only be climbing into the middle 60s.

Winds will stay breezy, but the difference from Saturday is that they will be coming out of the northwest helping to usher in fresher, drier air.

Acadiana Wind FORECAST RPM Rob.png
katc winds/temps

Gusts at times may exceed 25 mph..

It will then be back to a winter chill overnight Sunday into Monday morning as temperatures fall back into the upper 30s to lower 40s across the area.

The upcoming week will start out on the cool, but nice side as plentiful sunshine can be expected on Monday as highs top out in the mid-50s.

Mainly sunny skies will be in store for Tuesday (Groundhog's Day) and Wednesday with starts for both days in the 30s as afternoon highs top out in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

Milder conditions will ensue for the back half of the week before another front arrives on Friday, bringing with it another round of some rain.

Y'all have a great rest of the weekend!

White supremacist group vandalizes campus property, leaves stickers

BY HUNTER ELLIS AND CHLOE SALVESON, Managing multimedia editor and staff writer

Xavier Police (XUPD) and the Bias Action Response Team (BART) are investigating the vandalism of a “Black Lives Matter” banner displayed in front of Bellarmine Chapel, and stickers promoting the White nationalist group Patriot Front were found posted across campus earlier today.

The vandalism on campus happened concurrently with an admissions event at which many prospective students toured Xavier.

An XU Alert Me message sent this evening alerted students of the vandalism and stickers, specifying that at this point there is no evidence to indicate that the stickers were placed by a member of the Xavier community.

Part of the message read: “Xavier is aware that material from a group that advocates extremist ideologies (were found on campus)… and that a Black Lives Matter sign was vandalized… XUPD has removed the material and is investigating the situation. Hate has no home in the Xavier community.”

The banner, which read “Racism is a Sin: Black Lives Matter” has allegedly been sliced twice with an unspecified object, before it was taken down by XUPD on Saturday afternoon.

Newswire photo by Kate Ferrell

Additionally, at least 12 stickers have been found and removed by students and XUPD from several public locations across campus. Stickers were found on light posts across the Xavier Yard, specifically in front of Bellarmine Chapel and Gallagher Student Center.

These stickers had varying messages, including “AMERICA IS NOT FOR SALE,” “CONQUERED, NOT STOLEN,” “RECLAIM AMERICA” and “BETTER DEAD THAN RED.” Each listed the website for the organization Patriot Front, the group supposedly behind the slicing of the banner near Bellarmine.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Patriot Front is a “White nationalist hate group that was formed in the aftermath of the deadly ‘Unite the Right’ rally in Charlottesville, Va., of Aug. 12, 2017.”

The Patriot Front manifesto found on their website states: “Membership within the American nation is inherited through blood, not ink. Even those born in America may yet be foreign. Nationhood cannot be bestowed upon those who are not of the founding stock of our people, and those who do not share the common spirit that permeates our greater civilization, and the European diaspora.”

For more coverage of Patriot Front, see the following articles by Buzzfeed News and ProPublica.

This incident is also not isolated, as Patriot Front stickers have been found on college campuses across the country over the past four months. Most notably, stickers appeared at the nearby Northern Kentucky University (NKU) and Thomas More University two days prior to this occurrence at Xavier. In addition to stickers, a large rock in a common area at NKU was graffitied with Patriot Front markings. Both instances are currently under investigation.

Other recent incidents of Patriot Front propaganda appearing on college campuses include at State College on Jan. 8, at Colorado State University on Nov. 16, 2020 and at Miami University of Ohio on Oct. 6, 2020.

Students across campus, including Newswire members, reported the vandalism to XUPD and to BART this afternoon. The incident is currently undergoing the university’s official bias response process, which is further explained on their website

Newswire will continue its coverage of the incident on social media and on our radio show, the Newswire Live at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Any community members with relevant information are asked to contact the XUPD non-emergency number, 513-745-2000.

A Cold Front Shakes Up The Forecast - WWSB

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) -Saturday started a bit cool but quickly faded to warm sunshine. This warm sunshine will continue into Sunday but with more clouds starting to mix in. By Sunday evening a front moves in from the north with some possible strong storms. Based on the dynamics, the best chance for severe weather looks to be a bit further north, this is not to say a storm does not become strong to severe as it moves over us. For now the chance remains marginal for a severe storm. The line will move through late in the night and past the midnight hour into Monday. Once it pushes through, cooler and windy air falls in place behind. Temperatures Monday stay only in the mid 60′s and Tuesday we mat struggle to hit 60°. Winds will be quite strong with gust on Monday up to 25-30mph possible. We won’t see temperatures rebound to the 70′s till the latter part of the week.

Jill Ellis joins Sacramento front office in advance of two debuts - Yahoo Sports

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

Jill Ellis, who coached the United States Women's National Team to two World Cup titles, joined the front office of the NWSL expansion team in Sacramento, The Athletic reported.

Ellis' role will not just be limited to helping Sacramento's NWSL team in advance of its 2022 debut, she also will assist in Sacramento's launch of an MLS expansion team in 2023 season. An official title was not reported.

The United States won women's World Cup titles at Canada in 2015 and France in 2019. She took over the USWNT in 2014 and left after the 2019 World Cup, although she did stay with the team during a victory tour of games.

Ellis' United States teams had a 106-7-19 record. She also coached the United States to a disappointing fifth-pace finish in the 2016 Summer Olympics at Brazil.

"When I accepted the head coaching position this was the timeframe I envisioned," Ellis said, while announcing her intention to leave the USWNT. "The timing is right to move on and the program is positioned to remain at the pinnacle of women's soccer. Change is something I have always embraced in my life and for me and my family this is the right moment."

She remained with the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2020, taking an ambassador's role.

The USWNT hired Vlatko Andonovski as its new head coach. He was a coach in the NWSL with FC Kansas City and Reign FC before he moved to the national team.

Front Range Churches Rally Behind Front Line Workers - CBS Denver

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

DENVER (CBS4) – Nearly a year into the pandemic, hospital workers are still on the front lines, and churches are bring them some relief. More than two dozen churches along the Front Range have stepped up to feed front line workers.

The congregations at 28 churches from Pueblo to Fort Collins have raised money to pay for 10,000 meals given to healthcare workers. The churches partner with restaurants to make the meals, and then deliver them to hospitals weekly.

(credit CBS)

Recently the folks at D Bar in Denver packed up delicious meals of fettucine alfredo with grilled chicken. They topped off the meals with a chocolate chunk or snickerdoodle cookie.

“They could have a really simple boxed lunch, but we really wanted to take it a step further, and do something special. So when they have a break in their day from tackling this pandemic, they can really stop and enjoy,” said Charles Kollmann, General Manager of D Bar Denver.

(credit CBS)

The Pearl Church in Denver paid for the meals, and helped deliver them to the healthcare workers at Denver Health. They’re delivering 100 meals a week to the hospital for 6-weeks.

“At the Pearl Church, we’re just one small part of seeing the community come together, and be truly one community,” Malia Sawyer told CBS4.

(credit CBS)

The congregations donate money for the meals, the restaurants get the business during a difficult economic time, and the healthcare workers get a much needed kindness during one of the most difficult years of their careers.

“They’re tired, and they’re stretched thin. And when we deliver them these meals, there’s sort of a sense of uplift, because they know the community’s rallying around them in support,” said Sharif Abdelhamid, Director of Patient Experience and Advocacy at Denver Health.

Denver Health has received more than 60,000 meals in the last 10 months for its employees.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – The Atlanta Falcons have named Kyle Smith vice president of player personnel, the team announced Friday.

Smith joins the Falcons after 11 seasons with the Washington Football Team. He spent most of his career in Washington in college scouting but was promoted to vice president of player personnel in January of last year. In 2020, Smith oversaw both the college and pro personnel aspects of the front office.

"Kyle literally grew up in this business and is obsessed with, and passionate about, the process of building and managing competitive teams." Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said. "He is extremely smart, detailed and organized, and he couldn't be more excited to become an Atlanta Falcon.

"We are thrilled he is joining our team. I also wanted to acknowledge and appreciate our current staff who has shown flexibility and adaptability as we continue to make this transition within our organization. They have continued to focus on our goals as a team and we look forward to growing together."

Prior to his promotion, Smith spent three years as the team's director of college personnel. In that role, he led the organization's evaluation of collegiate talent and managed scouting efforts at both the area and national levels. After spending a year as an intern in 2010, he joined the team on a full-time basis in 2011. Smith spent six seasons as an area scout for the organization, most recently managing the team's scouting efforts in the Southeast region.

Smith graduated from Youngstown State, where he was twice named honorable mention all-conference while playing wide receiver and punt returner from 2002-05. He signed as a college free agent with the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent part of the 2006 offseason. In January of 2007, he was signed by Tampa Bay, which allocated him to NFL Europe's Berlin Thunder. He later had practice squad stints in the Arena Football League and Canadian Football League.

Smith was born in Warwick, R.I., and raised in Buffalo, N.Y. He is the son of long-time NFL executive A.J. Smith.

Another cold front this weekend - WBRZ

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

Another cold front will pass by over the weekend. Fortunately, it looks as though most of the daylight hours will be dry.

The Next 24 Hours: Overnight, temperatures will stay up a few degrees compared to the last few mornings as winds turn around to come out of the south. With a few clouds working in, expect a low in the mid 40s. A warm front will start to lift into the region on Saturday with increasing clouds and south winds pushing temperatures even higher. A run at 70 degrees is possible in the afternoon. A stray shower or two could develop in the Gulf air mass, but nothing organized is anticipated.

After That: The associated cold front and a broken line of showers will push through the area Saturday night and before dawn Sunday morning. Skies should clear quickly behind this front, so given the timing expected as of now, most of the daylight hours this weekend should be dry. Much of early next week will be quiet before we monitor a more impressive storm system for Thursday and Friday. More interesting than a few days with rain chances may be if whether or not a very cold air mass behind it can make it all the way to the Gulf Coast. CLICK HERE to view your complete 7-Day Forecast.

The Explanation: An upper level ridge will warm the atmosphere and cause some compressional warming Saturday in advance of the next frontal system. The associated upper level trough will invigorate a strong surface low over the Lower Midwest on Saturday. This low will help to pull a warm front north and cause southerly winds to bolster thermometers on Saturday afternoon. Moisture advancing inland could even churn up a spotty shower, but nothing widespread or organized is expected. The associated cold front will push through on Saturday night or Sunday morning with 50 to 80 percent rain coverage expected due to scattered showers. The upper low and surface low will move well north of the local area so the parameters are not supportive of severe weather, and possibly not even any thunderstorms. The storm system will push east of the area on Sunday ending rain chances from west to east during the morning hours. Sun and cooler temperatures will follow to end the weekend. Surface high pressure and northwesterly winds aloft will maintain cool and dry conditions through Tuesday. A large, longwave trough will dig into the Southwest by the middle of next week. Moisture will feed from southwest to northeast across the central Gulf Coast setting up a period of rain toward the end of next week. The trough will open up into a positive tilt and slow down which means there are no immediate alarms for severe weather. A much colder air mass is expected to follow that system into the Eastern U.S. It is still unclear if that very cold air will be shunted to our northeast or settle across the Gulf Coast.

Facing COVID-19 restrictions, these Irving ISD middle school students started a film festival - The Dallas Morning News

When the annual one-act play competition was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers at Irving ISD middle schools pondered their options.

Their brainstorming led to the district’s first-ever middle school film festival.

Using whatever video equipment was available to them, middle school students created short original films. Students and teachers recently gathered at Irving’s Singley Academy to screen the films.

Crockett Middle School theater students performed and filmed “Bad Audition” with green screens and iPads. The film, a comedy, is a collection of scenes featuring a limited number of actors, each positioned behind a protective shield of plexiglass.

Johnson Middle School students performed “Virtual Help Desk,” entirely over Zoom. Teacher Roxy Reynolds said each student had a role, from set and costume design to soundtrack selection and acting.

“It was really important to me that kiddos who are at home could still be part of it,” Reynolds said. “We have some really strong actors who just want to feel connected and seen. It was helpful to them, and they did such a great job.”

Austin Middle School students wrote a script and performed their original play via the app FlipGrid. The film, “Quarantine: Monologues for the Pandemic,” features a mixture of dramatic and comedic monologues.

“To see these kids being so open and brave to talk about what they’re feeling and experiencing really inspired me as a creator and writer myself,” theater teacher Aadrise Johnson said.

All of the teachers said they set out to provide a space for their students to be creative, express themselves and support one another in a difficult year.

“We took a bunch of lemons and made a lemon tart. It was not just lemonade, we made a full-baked pie that was tasty and beautiful,” said Lanell Pena, theater teacher at Crockett. “I’m super proud of us as a team.”

Front Range investors who helped blow the top off GameStop stock see a rigged game on Wall Street - The Denver Post

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

When it started to attract major media attention this week it had the trappings of a novel business story that could only happen in America and only on the internet.

A legion of armchair “retail” investors, connected through the Reddit message board r/wallstreetbets, have thrown their collective money behind maligned video game store chain GameStop, launching its stock price into the stratosphere. GameStop shares went from being worth less than $18 apiece in early January to more than $483 at one point on Thursday.

The little guys stuck it to the big guys. Hedge funds that had placed heavy bets that GameStop Corp.’s market value would fall — known as “shorting” the stock — took huge losses as the price rose and had to get in on the buying frenzy themselves to provide cover.

“These traders on Reddit, they just realized that this is a stock that is very undervalued and has been pushed down by short options,” 34-year-old Longmont resident Alex Mulvaney, the owner of roughly five shares of GameStop stock and a regular visitor to r/wallstreetbets, said Thursday.

By Thursday morning, the story took a more sinister turn in the eyes of investors.

Popular free trading platform Robinhood and other brokerage services that cater to retail investors clamped down on investments in GameStop and other so-called “meme stocks” like AMC Entertainment, Bed Bath & Beyond, Nokia and Tootsie Roll following cries for institutional investors and pundits about market manipulating. As of Thursday night, investors on Robinhood were only allowed to sell their positions in GameStop, not open news ones in some cases.

Robinhood said limited buying would open up again Friday but the damage to the company’s reputation and to GameStop’s stock price, which closed at $193.60 Thursday down from $347.51 Wednesday, was done.

“I’m furious at the system. We’re no longer in a free market basically,” said Matt Watkajtys, 32, of Denver. “You know the game is rigged.”

Watkajtys owns one share of GameStop. He bought it for $4 in April. The web developer didn’t even believe it was a good buy at that time. He couldn’t think of anyone who had shopped in one of the company’s stores in years. But he bought it out of curiosity and to go along with a r/wallstreetbets ride. It’s been anything but boring.

With platforms like Robinhood freezing buying on Thursday, the market essentially popped whatever bubble had formed around GameStop artificially and doomed investors who got in late chasing the big gains, Watkajtys said.

“That was my fear from the very beginning,” he said, “people making dumber and dumber decisions, putting money they couldn’t afford to lose into it because it just seemed like a chance to break out.”

Denver’s Matt Moore, a 29-year-old tax consultant, bought into GameStop earlier this week when its price was $100 per share and has since doubled his money.

“A hedge fund is going to find a way to win no matter what, so if I can find a way to make some money on the side great,” he said.

What Robinhood did Thursday amounts to false advertising, in Moore’s eyes. He filed a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He does not expect the company’s planned Initial Public Stock offering to go well after that maneuver.

“I don’t know what went on in the background to make them think that was a good business decision on their part,” he said.

Mulvaney is like Watkajtys and Moore, a hobbyist trader with a full-time career to pay the bills. But that doesn’t make him any less mad about how market powers moved to swat down GameStop investors Thursday amid a global health crisis that has been a boon to billionaires. He thinks back to when the market was falling to pieces during the 2008 housing crisis.

“They didn’t pause shares for retail investors then. They let us get fleeced,” he said. “(Thursday) was just the epitome of us taking our own financial destiny in our hands and seeing how quickly and effectively we get squashed.”

14 Front Range cities coordinate to warn of water shortages in alarmingly dry year - The Colorado Sun

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

As drought conditions intensify across Colorado, at least 14 cities in the Denver metro area say they will join forces to warn residents of looming water shortages and the need to cut back use this spring.

Denver Water’s Jason Finehout said a metro drought coordination effort would help ensure a consistent message on reducing water use in what is shaping up to be another alarmingly dry year.

“Right now 14 cities have signed up, but I expect that number to grow,” Finehout said.

Finehout said Denver Water would likely not decide until March whether to impose tough watering restrictions, but other participating communities, such as Thornton, are likely to move ahead.

Thornton’s John Orr said the city planned to implement restrictions sooner rather than later in order to prepare for what is likely to be a water-short year.

“Our team recommends that we treat this as a start to a multi-year drought,” Orr said. “We’re trying to be cautious.”

Orr’s comments came at the Jan. 21 meeting of the state Drought and Water Availability Task Force.

MORE: Record low Lake Powell and bad 2021 drought forecast sets stage for water cuts

Last year was the state’s second-driest calendar year on record, according to the Colorado Climate Center, leaving soils ultra dry. That is worrisome to weather trackers and water utilities, because the soil is likely to absorb much of the water coming out of this year’s snowpack.

Right now snowpack statewide is at 78% of normal, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and stored water supplies are also below average. Last year reservoirs stood at 107% of average at this time, but are now at just 82% of average.

“2020 was a doozy of a year,” said Peter Goble, climate specialist at the Colorado Climate Center. “And we just continue to fall farther and farther behind,”

In November the state announced it would activate a statewide emergency municipal drought response plan for only the second time in its history, citing the deteriorating water forecasts. The agricultural portion of the plan had already been activated over the summer.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the state is now blanketed in drought, with more than two-thirds of its terrain classified as being in extreme or exceptional drought, the worst condition.

Colorado has experienced four severe droughts since 2000, but the trend has intensified with the drought of 2018 barely lifting before 2020 brought searing temperatures and dry weather again.

Few expect this year to be any different. “My personal demeanor has gone from cautious to concerned,” said Swithin Dick with the Centennial Water and Sanitation District, which serves Highlands Ranch and which is a member of the new drought group. The district’s water reservoirs stand at 55% of capacity, a benchmark that is 25% lower than normal for this time of year, he said.

Denver Water will partner with Aurora Water to lead the coordinated drought communications response effort, Finehout said, with the first meeting tentatively scheduled for early February.

Minnesota lawmakers propose emergency paid leave for front-line workers - KSTP

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

“I am nervous about the day it is [positive] because my PTO is dwindling,” Buchanan said.

During a press conference on Thursday, she said she’s dealt with exposures both on the job and at home. She also had to take time away from work while her children were doing distance learning.

“I have personally lost over 84 hours of personal time [off] and that's more than a full-time paycheck for me,” Buchanan said. “Losing that much income is emotionally, mentally, physically and financially exhausting.”

She joined other essential workers to advocate for the emergency paid leave legislation.

“Over the course of this pandemic, front-line workers across countless industries have put their safety on the line to do the essential work and keep Minnesota moving,” Bill McCarthy, president of the Minnesota AFL-CIO, said. “We owe these workers a debt of gratitude but, unfortunately, many are being punished for doing the right thing to preserve public health. They’re losing pay and sick time to quarantine for possible exposure, to care for COVID positive family members or themselves, to care for children in distance learning or while waiting for test results.”

The legislation would provide paid leave to workers who qualify for a crucial sector exemption under Executive Order 20-48, who cannot work from home, and who are not receiving other state and federal benefits that compensate them for the time they’re unable to work.

It would cover health care workers, first responders, food workers and others.

House lawmakers held a hearing this week on the bill in the House Labor, Industry, Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committee.

Full COVID-19 coverage

Author of the House bill, Rep. Cedrick Frazier, DFL-New Hope, said he’s been speaking with front-line workers, including those that work at long-term care facilities.

“There were workers that were hesitant to identify they had symptoms of COVID because they did not have the provisions in place to take time off,” Frazier said. “This bill is by no means meant to punish those employers who did the right thing. The idea is to capture and take care of those who were not taken care of.”

The legislation would also offer part-time workers some leave through a formula explained in the bill.

It could be used if the employee, or someone they take care of, is isolating due to symptoms or quarantining due to exposure. Employees could also apply for the paid leave if their child’s school or daycare is closed due to COVID-19 precautions.

It would be retroactive to March 13, 2020.

“I think that's a mistake, very costly to businesses,” said Rep. Joe McDonald (R-Delano). “Not to mention, it's such a broad scope. “Who all qualifies under your bill?”

McDonald also voiced concerns about the cost to long-term care facilities.

“This is a financial burden on them, they are struggling with a limited budget,” he said. “I have heard from our nursing homes, long-term care folks here that this could devastate them.”

Others raised concerns about the cost of the program as well.

“We may have to make a decision, based on the amount of money available, which of the essential workers we'll be able to help,” said Rep. Bob Dettmer, R-Forest Lake.

Kimber Wraalstad, administrator at North Shore Hospital, estimates an additional 100 hours of paid leave for all of their employees would cost them more than $525,000.

Wraalstad also spoke on behalf of the Minnesota Hospital Association, voicing concern about the retroactive application.

“In the past 10 months, rates of pay have changed, vacation, sick or PTO time have been used,” she said. “In addition, the potential tax implications for earnings from early 2020 being paid in 2021 are mind-boggling.”

Those on the front lines told lawmakers the pandemic continues to cost them earnings.

“I have been tested six times,” said Ashley Haverland, a registered nurse. “I work 12-hour shifts and that meant if I missed three days of work, I would have to use 32 hours of PTO while I quarantined responsibly.”

She works in an emergency room and said it can sometimes take days to get a test back.

“We’re running out [of days] and starting to go without pay and this leaves us to feel we have been failed by the systems that we provide care in,” she said. “We are tired, we are frustrated.”

Haverland said other nurses have allowed her to borrow time from them to cover the gaps.

“I have a 17-month-old son who attends daycare,” she said. “There have been three occurrences where I have had to miss work due to a daycare closure because they had an exposure or are waiting for a COVID test. How will I provide care for him when I only have five hours of banked time off right now?”

Gov. Tim Walz is also proposing emergency paid leave as part of his budget proposal. The governor is recommending up to 80 hours of paid time off for health care workers.
