When the annual one-act play competition was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers at Irving ISD middle schools pondered their options.
Their brainstorming led to the district’s first-ever middle school film festival.
Using whatever video equipment was available to them, middle school students created short original films. Students and teachers recently gathered at Irving’s Singley Academy to screen the films.
Crockett Middle School theater students performed and filmed “Bad Audition” with green screens and iPads. The film, a comedy, is a collection of scenes featuring a limited number of actors, each positioned behind a protective shield of plexiglass.
Johnson Middle School students performed “Virtual Help Desk,” entirely over Zoom. Teacher Roxy Reynolds said each student had a role, from set and costume design to soundtrack selection and acting.
“It was really important to me that kiddos who are at home could still be part of it,” Reynolds said. “We have some really strong actors who just want to feel connected and seen. It was helpful to them, and they did such a great job.”
Austin Middle School students wrote a script and performed their original play via the app FlipGrid. The film, “Quarantine: Monologues for the Pandemic,” features a mixture of dramatic and comedic monologues.
“To see these kids being so open and brave to talk about what they’re feeling and experiencing really inspired me as a creator and writer myself,” theater teacher Aadrise Johnson said.
All of the teachers said they set out to provide a space for their students to be creative, express themselves and support one another in a difficult year.
“We took a bunch of lemons and made a lemon tart. It was not just lemonade, we made a full-baked pie that was tasty and beautiful,” said Lanell Pena, theater teacher at Crockett. “I’m super proud of us as a team.”
