Norphlet Middle School students compete in canned food drive

It’s the season for giving and the students of Norphlet Middle School are participating in full force.
The Smackover-Norphlet district announced Thursday that the school is conducting a canned food drive that will end at the start of Christmas break on December 21.
NMS library media specialist Melody Morgan, who helped organize the drive, said that the student council generally conducts the canned food drive but decided on a different project this year.
School staff members decided that the drive should still go on, however.
In an effort to boost participation, the drive this year is a competition between each grade level, 5th through 8th.
The winning grade will be granted a 30 minute free time period at the end of a school day before Christmas break, according to Morgan.
Even with the allure of this prize, Morgan said students are excited just for the chance to give back during the holiday season.
“It has generated a lot of interest. I think it’s just a great way to help others,” Morgan said.
Before the start of Christmas break, all the cans will be donated to a local food bank.
“I just think it gives [the students] a sense of helping out. Kids can’t always think of ways to help out others and this gives them an avenue to do that,” Morgan said.
The school is accepting any kind of canned food for the drive.
