A police car’s siren led the parade of cars through the quiet Monmouth County neighborhood, as dozens of friends’ and EMS and fire vehicles joined in, honking horns.
The commotion was to celebrate “wish day” for 15-year-old Jaden Lucien. He was born with only one working kidney and it began to fail this year.
He wished for a camper, and it came true Sunday.
“It’s crazy and exciting, I can’t believe how many people showed up,” a surprised Lucien said, as people clapped when the camper stopped in front of his family;s Neptune home.
“His wish was for a family camper, he wants to go exploring and go on adventures,” said Tom Weatherall President and CEO of Make a Wish New Jersey.
Jersey Mike’s Subs granted the camper wish and showed up with Lucien’s favorite sub from the Jersey Shore-based sandwich chain.
“It’s just a day where he doesn’t have to worry about being sick. He doesn’t have to think about medicine. This is all he is thinking about,” said his mom, Ashley Lucien.
Ashley Lucien was able to donate a kidney to her son, and it was transplanted into Jaden earlier this year. Mom wiped away tears as Jaden walked into his camper.
The camper has a bathroom with a shower and toilet, bedroom, kitchen with a fridge, stovetop, and a dining table.
“It’s crazy, it felt like a house on wheels,” Lucien said.
“How many people love him, how many people turned out supporting him today. He’s not a kidney recipient, he’s just Jaden,” Ashley Lucien said.
