KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — A man believed to have been responsible for crashing a stolen vehicle during a police pursuit and then fleeing on foot was in need of life-saving measures once found.
A man, who was hiding in a van in front of a residence not far from the crash scene, appeared to have overdosed on drugs when he was found by law enforcement Sunday afternoon, according to a news release from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.
Recognizing the signs of an overdose NARCAN was administered with some effect, and after a second dose he became more responsive and breathing more normally, deputies said. The man, who was unresponsive and discolored when deputies found him, was then transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
Deputies believe the man was the same man who had been spotted driving a stolen vehicle on Sprinkle Road, near the intersection of Lake Street in Comstock Township, at around 12:20 p.m. Dec. 13.
The vehicle was stolen earlier Sunday at the Walmart on Gull Road, deputies said.
Deputies attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, but it fled for a short distance until it crashed in the curved roadway at Lake Street and Olmstead Road. The driver then fled on foot and after crashing the car, the release states.
Shortly thereafter, a homeowner in the immediate area called 911 reporting a subject was hiding under their camper. The person then entered into their unlocked van, they said.
Deputies, assisted by Kalamazoo Township and Michigan State Police, responded to the residence and gave commands from outside the van for the suspect to surrender. When the suspect did not surrender, a K-9 deputy was used to approach the van.
