Lomax Middle School earns national honor - Houston Chronicle

Pasadena ISD’s Carter Lomax Middle School has made the grade, becoming one of two schools nationwide to be singled out for recognition by a national nonprofit organization that provides a learning program used in 400 campuses.

During a virtual awards ceremony Dec. 16, the campus was given the Rise Award by Summit Learning, a nonprofit national committee-led group that provides a program based on encouraging student engagement, student-teacher connections and mastery based learning.

Also given the award was Prairie Heights Middle School in Evans, Colo.

Lomax joined the Summit Learning program five years ago and has since experienced a significant increase in test scores in STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) exams among special education and English Language Learners students.

“This school has created tremendous programs that allow students to reach their full potential, leading to a successful future,” Andrew Goldin, Summit’s executive director, said in a press release. “Carter Lomax is a model of success that we and other schools can all look to in terms of ensuring students are thriving.”

More Information

The program instituted a “mind-set change” at Lomax in how educators educate and how students learn, according to Lomax Principal Norma Penny.

Penny said the campus has watched as students gradually became “self-directed learners” through tools that included mentoring programs, workshops and support systems promoting students’ individual learning needs.

“It is through this work that we were able to support all students, enabling them to access content and develop rigorous and robust projects using a cognitive skills continuum,” Penny said in a statement.

The Summit recognition comes as schools deal with COVID-related restrictions and challenges.

“This award is most outstanding especially during this unprecedented time,” Penny said. “I am so proud of my students and staff for going above and beyond as if we were operating under normal conditions.”

This is the first year Summit Learning has given out Rise Awards.

“We are pleased to receive honor in recognition of the strong teamwork among our students, staff and district personnel who have worked relentlessly for the best education for each child,” Penny said.
