Work is continuing at the new middle school located on Shaw Road, recently named Blake Bass Middle School, in anticipation of its opening in August 2021.
The board of education, at its November meeting, approved district lines for the new middle school. Coweta County School Superintendent Evan Horton gave an update on the construction progress for the school at the meeting.
Installation of asphalt drives and parking lots is proceeding, and masonry work is 40 percent complete. Roof work is 75 percent complete, and metal framing for skylights is near completion.
Plumbing, electrical and HVAC rough-ins are proceeding. Horton said the project is on schedule for substantial completion by July 7, 2021.
“If that timeline will hold, that will give us plenty of time to get into the building and get ready to start school,” Horton said.
In addition to the new middle school, other school system projects are continuing around the county.
Nixon Centre addition and renovations
The Nixon Centre addition and renovations project is substantially complete, with some small items left to be completed in the existing building.
Sewer line extension
Extension of the main trunk line for sewer at Northgate High School, Blake Bass Middle School and Canongate Elementary School is being completed under an intergovernmental agreement with Coweta County Water & Sewerage Authority. Installation of the sewer main is complete.
Northgate/Canongate sewer connections
Tie-ins to the existing sewer lines are complete and the system is online. Fill-in of existing septic tanks and final landscaping should be completed soon.
Northgate renovation and modifications
Phase one of the renovations to Northgate High School is scheduled for completion during Thanksgiving break. Demolition for phase one in building 500 has been completed, along with the installation of a new ceiling grid.
Painting is complete, and they are waiting for the delivery of light fixtures and HVAC units.
Phase two, which includes work on building 400, will begin during Thanksgiving break. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2021.
“We’re well into that project now and they’re making good progress there,” Horton said.
Centegix System
The Centegix Security System has been installed at all schools and administrative facilities utilizing state security grant funding. Installation of the equipment is complete, and testing is being performed at various locations.
HVAC modifications
HVAC modifications are planned for Arnall Middle, Jefferson Parkway, Thomas Crossroads and Newnan Crossing Elementary Schools. Design work is complete, and proposals were evaluated Oct. 8.
Bottle filler replacements
Replacement bottle fillers have been ordered, and are scheduled for delivery in January.
