DULUTH, MN-- Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and more.
Those who volunteer for the annual Twin Ports Thanksgiving Day Buffet know a thing or two about cooking a Thanksgiving meal.
"The events been around for over 31 years," said event coordinator Monica Hendrickson.
This year, during the pandemic, roughly 7,000 meals will still be served. However, that won't be happening in the DECC ballroom like before. This year, volunteers are bringing Thanksgiving meals to your front door.
Carol Cheslak has been volunteering for the buffet for four years now.
"It's been quite different because we're so conscientious about the safeness of it," Cheslak said. "Yet we feel the community really needs. So we're working really hard to make it work."
Volunteers will pack up 640 family meal kits, which more than 100 drivers will deliver to families and people in need throughout the Twin Ports.
Three thousand hot meals will be sent out on Thanksgiving Day.
Those who are volunteering say while 2020 has been different, the Thanksgiving Buffet was going to happen one way or another.
"They're so grateful, we tear up, so it's very satisfying."
"You've got to help each other out. Especially this time of year, some people don't have jobs," said first-time volunteer Helen Gronlund.
The volunteers will also be packing up 1,000 bagged lunches that will be sent to the Damiano Center and CHUM for those who can't get a hot meal.
