WESTLAKE, Ohio –

OVI: Detroit Road

Officers at 11:15 p.m. Oct. 30 responded to a report of a vehicle stopped facing eastbound in the westbound lane of Detroit Road just east of Columbia Road.

The driver appeared unconscious and possibly in medical distress, according to the police. As the 44-year-old Bay Village resident came to, he gave a thumbs up to the officers but appeared unable to talk. As an officer attempted to make sense of the man’s odd behavior and a squad was summoned, the officer placed the vehicle in park for everyone’s safety.

At that point, the driver unexpectedly grabbed a can of compressed air, placed it into his mouth, and inhaled the contents. He then hid the can, but officers had already seen him abuse the harmful intoxicants, according to a police statement.

Officers recovered four aerosol cans from the passenger compartment. They arrested the man for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and abusing harmful intoxicants. He refused to provide a urine sample for analysis. Police later added an attempted drug possession charge for a narcotic pill they found.

The man previously had been arrested for driving under the influence after huffing aerosol on Oct. 22 in Middleburg Heights, according to the police. His vehicle was impounded.

Theft: Detroit Road

A contractor at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 3 called police to report the theft of tools from a job site in the 24000 block of Detroit Road.

The theft occurred when the worker left the site to get additional supplies. Witnesses saw a man walking around the tools, which were valued at $2,000. The suspect was last seen entering a vehicle an older back and white police-style car, according to police. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Westlake police at 440-871-3311.

Drugs found: Clemens Road

Officers at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 29 stopped a vehicle for equipment violations.

The driver seemed to have trouble remembering who he was, and officers found out he misidentified himself. The male driver finally admitted he was a 29-year-old from Sandusky who had drug trafficking warrants out of Huron County.

The front-seat passenger, the mother of a 1-year-old in the back seat, possessed needles and a methamphetamine pipe, according to police. She was a 28-year-old Norwalk resident.

The adult in the rear seat, a 28-year-old Bellevue resident, also had drug-related warrants out of Huron County.

A small amount of suspected heroin and a scale were collected from the car. The two males were turned over to Huron County to answer to their prior drug trafficking issues. The female and baby were picked up on the scene by a friend.

A crime lab is analyzing the suspected narcotics and additional charges could result.
