MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Township Committee voted tonight to name the front steps and walkway of the Maplewood Municipal Building the Jerry Ryan Plaza.
The move was made during tonight's streaming meeting to honor the late Gerard (Jerry) Ryan's memory. He served 19 non-contiguous years on the Township Committee, including being mayor from 1998 to 2000, and passed away May 27 after a three-year battle with cancer at age 59.
He was the youngest person to have served as Maplewood’s mayor. At the time of his death, he was in his fifth year as chair of the Maplewood Planning Board, which he had served 23 non-contiguous years.
“Jerry spent a number of years in the building...as a member of the township committee, as the mayor for three years, as the chair of the planning board,” said Township Committee Member Vic DeLuca. “So I think that naming that plaza, as the gateway to the building” where Jerry served for a long time “would be just a terrific idea,” he added.
The resolution was approved unanimously, and Mayor Frank McGehee added that the Plaza would have a formal dedication sometime in the future.
