Eaton Middle School closed because of Covid-19 - Greeley Tribune

Eaton Middle School was closed last week because of positive cases of COVID-19 and possible exposure to the disease that’s caused by the new coronavirus.

The seventh and eighth-grade students went out on quarantine in late October and the sixth graders were out as of early November, according to letters from Eaton School District Superintendent Jay Tapia to district families obtained by the Greeley Tribune.

Tapia did not responded to multiple requests from the Tribune for information on the quarantine situation at the middle school. No information was available on the district website or Facebook page. In early September, the district posted information on its website home page when 84 students and five staff members were forced into a COVID-related quarantine at Eaton High School.

In a letter dated Oct. 27, Tapia said the seventh and eighth-grade students were to be quarantined for 14 calendar days because of positive cases at the school.

Tapia’s letter does not indicate the number of students included in the quarantine, the number of positive cases or whether the positive tests were from students or staff. Fourteen calendar days from Oct. 27 is Nov. 10.

The letter said the quarantine only impacted students in the seventh and eighth grades.

“Following guidance from the Weld County Health Department and the Colorado Department of Education, we are working with Eaton Middle School students and families to respond appropriately,” Tapia wrote in the Oct. 27 letter.

Tapia issued another letter dated Nov. 2 in which he said the sixth-grade students were to quarantine through Nov. 9 because of an exposure Oct. 27 at the middle school. The sixth-grade students are eligible to return to school on Nov. 10.

Tapia said the quarantine period is established from the day of the exposure.

In both letters, Tapia said siblings of middle school students are not impacted and can continue to attend school.

“However, all students quarantined and their families should monitor their symptoms accordingly,” Tapia wrote in the Nov. 2 letter. “If symptoms arise with anyone in your family, we encourage you to contact your healthcare provider.”

The Eaton school closure comes in the midst of a resurgence of Covid-19 in Weld County and statewide.

On Friday, The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment reported 226 new cases of Covid-19 and a two-week positivity rate at 13.01%. There were a 179 Covid-19 hospitalizations in county regionals hospitals as of Friday.

The county health department reported six cases in Eaton as of Friday. This marks the fourth time since Oct. 30 the town has had six cases in a day, which is the highest one-day total for the 80615 zip code based on county health department data available since April 1.

On Thursday, Greeley Central and Frontier Academy Elementary School in Greeley-Evans School District 6 announced plans to close in favor of remote learning through Thanksgiving break.

Frontier Academy Elementary closed for the second time this year. Frontier Academy Executive Director Stephen Seedorf wrote the closure came because of a staff shortage with multiple people being quarantined at the same time.

“The major differences from the first experience is that we are much more prepared for online learning over these next two weeks and we already sent supplies, including devices, home with students yesterday so we can hit the ground running on Monday with no delay,” Seedorf said in an email.

Two other District 6 schools are also currently on building-wide remote learning: Jefferson High School until Nov. 12 and Westridge Academy Charter School until Nov. 18.
