Bethel Middle School closes to in-person learning due to staff shortages - Danbury News Times

BETHEL — The middle school will switch to distance learning until after Thanksgiving break due to staffing shortages after another coronavirus case was reported.

The latest case is with a member of the Bethel middle and high schools and exposure was limited to one staff member and a small number of students, Superintendent Christine Carver said in a letter to families on Wednesday.

But the middle school was already short on staff due to employees being asked to quarantine, so the school must go to distance learning effective Thursday, she said.

“While the BMS exposure affected only a cohort, it has a significant impact on staffing, due to the nature of the exposure and other staff members that were already on quarantine,” Carver wrote.

While certain students have temporarily moved to distance learning due to exposures, this is the first time this academic year that an entire school in Bethel has needed to do so for an extended time.

The plan is to return to the hybrid model on Nov. 30. The initial hope had been for the middle school to return fully in person on Nov. 30 after switching to hybrid last week due to staffing shortages.

Bethel High School will remain on hybrid, the model it has been on all academic year.

“We are ensuring that the routine COVID-19 cleaning and disinfecting procedures are adequate and in use as required,” Carver wrote.

This is the 19th case in the district and the seventh at the middle school and fourth at the high school. Two of those cases affected both schools, according to data on the district’s website. Less than 1 percent of the 3,600 students and staff in the district have gotten sick.

Officials have already contacted those at Bethel High School who were in close contact with the person who tested positive and were notifying on Wednesday the exposed Bethel Middle School members, Carver said.

“We will continue to closely monitor the health conditions of our students and staff,” she wrote. “We will also continue to implement all of the mitigation strategies in our reopening plan. The health and safety of all members of our school community remain our priority. We want to remind families to continue to conduct daily health screenings for symptoms before sending students to school or any extracurricular programs.”
