Quarantine lifted at Hurricane Middle School - WSAZ

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Putnam County School officials say 65-plus students and four faculty/staff members from Hurricane Middle School were told Tuesday they no longer needed to quarantine.

WSAZ first reported last week about 69 individuals from HMS being quarantined after one positive case in the school. Putnam County Schools said the individuals that have had their quarantine lifted are from that previous case.

“It’s been a disaster as far as trying to figure out everything that’s going on,” said Hurricane Middle School parent Brittany Gregory. “Then to get the phone call (Tuesday) to be told that our kids don’t need to quarantine.”

Dr. Michael Robie, Putnam County Health Department Health Officer, said they use the West Virginia Department of Education criteria when it comes to dealing with positive or possible COVID-19 cases within schools.

“After we kind of looked through and read through the documentation from the State and kind of got a better sense of, I think collectively working together to come up with a good plan and we’ve kind of revised some things.”

Dr. Robie said if students are within 6 feet of a positive COVID-19 case for at least 10 minutes, then those people need to quarantine for 14 days from the day of their last contact.

“So for some people it may be the full fourteen days," he said. "But for most people, by the time we get a positive test, that last day is usually several days passed. So it’s usually not the entire 14 days.”

Dr. Robie said you’re much safer quarantining a large group of people initially until you’re able to complete contact tracing.

“That’s exactly what we’ve done, is follow the state guidelines by quarantining the larger group that we needed to and as we’ve gone through seating charts and figuring out distances in classrooms and that type of thing, we’ve been able to realize that some people no longer need to be quarantined.”

So far, all of the positive cases within Putnam schools are not believed to be contracted from within the schools.

“None of the kids got it because they were in school,” Robie told WSAZ. “They all have family members or other people who were sick at home. You know, statistically, if you live in the same household, you have a twenty percent chance of becoming positive, whereas like in a school, it’s like 0.13% chance.”

In addition on Tuesday, Putnam County Schools announced that five people have been asked to quarantine from Conner Street Elementary after a positive COVID-19 case there.
