Bob Marcucci, principal at Davidson Middle School in San Rafael, has been selected as assistant superintendent of business services for San Rafael City Schools.
The board of education is scheduled to vote on Marcucci’s appointment at its Sept. 14 meeting.
“I am very excited to continue my service to the students, staff and families of San Rafael City Schools in this new role,” said Marcucci, 47, of San Anselmo, a district teacher and administrator for the past 23 years.
“I have a deep respect for the departments and employees that provide services essential to the functioning of our schools,” he added. “I am humbled and honored to be selected for this important leadership role. I will not let our community down.”
Marcucci was selected as finalist after a search to replace Doug Marquand, who is retiring at the end of the year. If appointed by the board as expected, Marcucci will have an annual starting salary of $199,844.
Jim Hogeboom, superintendent of the district, said he was confident that Marcucci would quickly get up to speed on the business side of district operations. In particular, Marcucci will be able to spend the next four months working closely with Marquand before he leaves on Dec. 31.
“At first glance, it may seem that Mr. Marcucci does not necessarily ‘fit’ the traditional profile of a school district business official,” Hogeboom said. “However, I firmly believe his broad base of experience fully qualifies him to successfully navigate this new endeavor.”
Hogeboom pointed to Marcucci’s “tremendous knowledge of SRCS, immense personal and professional skills and passion for serving our community.”
Those attributes “make him the ideal candidate for this senior-level leadership position during this unique time for SRCS and public education, when we have the opportunity to re-envision our current structures,” Hogeboom said.
Susan Akram, the assistant principal at Davidson, will assume the role of interim principal, Hogeboom said. The district will do a statewide search to fill the principal’s position in the spring.
“Ms. Akram’s experience at Davidson, her skilled communication and her talented fellow administrators will ensure that Davidson’s students, staff and families are well cared for during this time of transition,” Hogeboom said.
Akram, 52, of Mill Valley will have a $170,000 annual salary in the interim post.
Marcucci, a product of San Rafael schools, began teaching at Coleman Elementary School in the district. Later he was principal at Laurel Dell Elementary and Glenwood Elementary before leading Davidson Middle School, where he has been the principal for the past six years.
“Mr. Marcucci has gained deep knowledge and understanding of both school and district operations, and he has built trusting and collaborative relationships with the greater community, including our labor partners, students, families, and community partners — as well as his colleagues,” Hogeboom said. “He has consistently demonstrated strong organizational, administrative, managerial and fiduciary skills, and he has a clear understanding of district goals, priorities, policies and regulations.”
A fluent Spanish speaker, Marcucci also “understands the challenges and importance of equity and has the cultural competency and skills to address difficult issues on a daily basis,” Hogeboom added.
“He has emerged as one of our district’s greatest transformational leaders and equity advocates,” he said.
Marquand’s retirement was announced in July.
