North Jersey middle school goes to all-remote classes after teacher tests positive for COVID-19 - NJ.com

Less than two weeks after the first day of classes, a Bergen County middle school is temporarily closing for in-person classes after a teacher tested positive for COVID-19, school officials said.

Woodcliff Lake Middle School will be closed for 14 days after a teacher reported testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, said Superintendent Lauren Barbelet. The district’s administrative team notified families and other staff members who came in close contact with the teacher on Sept. 8, said Barbelet. Those teachers will be excluded from school for 14 days, she said.

After the teacher reported testing positive for COVID-19, the school closed Friday. The teacher was out Sept. 9 and 10 and was only in school on Sept. 8, said Barbelet. Since the potential exposure to the teacher with COVID-19 was Sept. 8, the school is expected to reopen Sept. 23, said Barbelet.

It is unclear how many people at the school were in close contact with the teacher who tested positive, though Barbelet said there was an “abundance."

“As the Superintendent, I made a decision to temporarily close Woodcliff Middle School and switch all middle school students to remote learning based on the abundance of other faculty members who came in close contact with the teacher,” Barbelet said in a statement. “Those faculty members are now being tested and will also quarantine. It is our hope that our teacher will recover quickly and that this remains an isolated case.”

Before the closure brought on by the positive test, the district’s schools were open five days a week from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., said Barbelet. Students would attend in-person class for the first part of the day, return home for lunch at 12:30 p.m. and then continue class through remote learning from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., she said.

Parents also had the option of all-remote learning.
