Google is looking for its next homepage Doodle, and a New Jersey student’s drawing is in the running.
Yewon Lee, a Fort Lee middle schooler, was selected as the top submission from the Garden State, with 53 other state winners as tens of thousands of projects were filed from around the nation, along with Washington, D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Lee was among five artists chosen to vie for the grand prize. The other finalists are from Hawaii, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.
As a top-five finalist, Lee will receive a $5,000 college scholarship, Google hardware for the academic year as well as some swag from Google. If she wins the national competition, Lee will get a $30,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 technology investment grant for her school and have her artwork featured on the search giant’s homepage for 24 hours.
Lee’s drawing features an older gentleman and a young girl sitting on a bench eating ice cream cones, two girls sharing an umbrella under the rain, a sunflower, a boy helping a pregnant woman tie her shoes, two children planting a tree and two boys carrying a letter ‘E.’
Google’s homepage doodle usually has images spelling out its name, and Lee’s images do the same.
This year’s theme is “I show kindness by...” to which Lee responded, “by treating all different kinds of people as my neighbor” with her artwork.
“Today, it’s so important to show kindness and compassion, and this year’s contestants shared the multitude of ways they demonstrate empathy in their communities,” said Jane Woodall, a Google brand manager.
Google’s Doodle team includes artists and engineers to typically honor, pay homage and dedicate their homepage art to cultural and historic events.
Judges will pick the winner of the students’ drawings contest in the coming weeks.
