CRANFORD - About 20 protesters gathered in front of the Cranford Post Office Tuesday afternoon to decry post office service disruptions in the lead up to the November election, which is largely expected to be conducted by mail due to the pandemic.
Protesters waved signs for honking passersby saying, “Fire the Postmaster General,” “Hands off our USPS” and “Save the PO, DeJoy Must Go.” Organized by Mary Heller, the rally in front of the Cranford post office Tuesday was among multiple that were planned across the state on National Day of Action to preserve the U.S. Postal Service.
"Everyone is worried about voting in November because of the pandemic," said Heller. "Nobody wants to go to a polling place and risk their health and possibly their life. When we see that the Postmaster is trashing equipment and doing worker slowdowns by refusing to fund overtime and other ways of sabotaging mail delivery, people have already seen that their mail has slowed."
"What we want to do is try to make sure that the Senate passes the 25 billion dollar aid package that went through the House last week. To do that, we need pressure on Mitch McConnell and any vulnerable Republican Senators," Heller added.
New Jersey residents are anticipated to have the option to vote by mail or vote in person with at least half of polling places required to be open for in-person voting. People who are disabled would get the option to vote on a machine with the rest anticipated to have the option to drop off their vote-by-mail ballots or fill out a provisional ballot at the polling place. It is a plan that Trump’s reelection campaign has sued New Jersey over.
