Fall sports can move forward
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine will allow fall sports to go forward this fall.
DeWine's administration will issue an order regarding all youth sports – both under the Ohio High School Athletic Association and other intermural leagues. That includes both contact and non-contact sports.
Spectators will be limited to a small number of people close to the athlete or other participant, such as a marching band or drill team member.
The order will allow teams and leagues to delay sports to the spring if they choose.
DeWine said sports bring structure, skills and joy to participants.
Prevention key for return to sports
Dr. James Borchers, a sports medicine doctor with the Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center, says the health of the community will affect how young athletes are able to compete.
Borchers said he wouldn't recommend sports for his children if the area had a high rate of cases and couldn't test for COVID-19 easily,
If a student tests positive for COVID-19, he or she should meet with their doctor before returning to activity, Borchers said.

Cases heading in right direction
Ohio reported 861 new COVID-19 cases between Monday and Tuesday – lower than the 21-day average of 1,116 new cases per day.
A staff member at an Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown tested positive for COVID-19 – the first in that facility. All staff and any resident who might have been exposed were being tested.
Over the past 24 hours, Ohio Department of Health reported 39 deaths related to COVID-19. That was higher than the 21-day average of 23 deaths.
In total, 3871 Ohioans have died and 109,923 have been infected by the novel coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic.

COLUMBUS – Gov. Mike DeWine is expected today to announce details for how contact sports at Ohio schools can safely resume this fall.
Athletes, parents and coaches have been waiting weeks for an announcement from DeWine on how they can compete. The governor said last week plans were still being finalized, and he would share them today.
“We’ve been working with the Ohio High School Athletic Association to get it right, to provide guidelines to make it as safe as possible," DeWine said last week.
DeWine hinted there would be limits on spectators and emphasized the decision to play would be left to families, schools and local health officials.
An Ohio Department of Health order currently prohibits contact sports football, soccer and field hockey from competitions with opposing teams. That order will have to be modified to allow play.
Soccer and field hockey games were scheduled to begin this week. For football, the Ohio High School Athletic Association has proposed a six-game regular season with everyone making the playoffs.
