Coronavirus cases in San Antonio schools: Southwest ISD middle school reports COVID-19 case - San Antonio Express-News

Below is a roundup of known COVID-19 cases in San Antonio-area schools and districts. We'll update this list as information becomes available.

Southwest ISD:

Resnik Middle School

Aug. 21: On Friday, Southwest ISD's Resnik Middle School sent a letter to its staff, informing them of a positive COVID-19 case on campus.

Resnik Middle School Principal Odilia Martinez said in the letter the infected staff member was last seen on campus Wednesday, Aug. 19. The middle school is not releasing any details that may identify the staff member.

According to the letter, the individual did not come into close contact with other staff members, and the areas the individual accessed have been closed and deep cleaned.

Operations at Resnik Middle School will continue as usual, the letter said. Southwest ISD began in-class and remote learning Monday.

North East ISD:

Las Lomas Elementary School

Aug. 19: On Wednesday, North East Independent School District was notified about an employee at Las Lomas Elementary School who tested positive for COVID-19, according to Aubrey Chancellor, the district's spokeswoman. The employee was last seen on campus Friday, Aug. 14.

In the past two weeks, there have been eight COVID-19 cases at North East ISD. Three employees tested positive for the virus at Longs Creek Elementary, two custodians at Roan Forest Elementary, one employee each at Harris and Wood middle schools, and the employee at Las Lomas.

It is unclear when the previous seven employees tested positive for COVID-19.

North East ISD students are not yet on campuses, but teachers are working from their classrooms for virtual learning. Cafeteria and maintenance workers and custodians also are present, Chancellor said.

The schools have been cleaned and disinfected, according to Chancellor.

Boerne ISD:

Aug. 20: Boerne ISD confirmed via email that it has had five coronavirus cases since the district reopened its schools for in-person instruction on Aug. 12.

The confirmation came after Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff spoke about Boerne ISD's cases during a Wednesday COVID-19 briefing. Wolff brought up the cases because of trends that show more positive coronavirus cases among individuals 17 or younger.

Wolff said San Antonio and school districts will need to be ready once schools begin in-person instruction. The Boerne school district has two schools inside Bexar County.

The district said there has been one confirmed case each at Champion and Boerne high schools, Kendall Elementary, Boerne Middle School and Boerne Academy.

The district did not disclose when the infected individuals were last seen on campus or if they were students or staff members.

Bryan Benway, Boerne ISD Director of Communications, said the district is confident in its safety protocols.

"Each time our protocols have been utilized, we have improved on the execution of them," Benway said via email. "We are focused on the safety of our students, parents, teachers, and staff, and are having a great first week and a half of school."

He added the district has nearly 11,000 people between its staff and students.

Comal ISD:

Canyon High School:

Aug. 8-9: A student at Canyon High School tested positive for COVID-19 during a school band camp, according to a letter that was sent out to parents.

The letter was sent to parents from Canyon High School band director Steve Vaden and said the student had participated in the camp on Aug. 6.
The band equipment at the school has been cleaned and sanitized. It is unclear when the school district was notified of the positive test.

Smithson Valley High School:

Aug 11: Comal ISD said that one student from Smithson Valley High School tested positive for COVID-19 last week. The student was participating in a strength and conditioning camp, the district said.

Comal ISD said the student was last seen on campus on Aug. 4. The district sent out a letter to parents on Aug. 7, which was the day officials received the coronavirus test results on the student.

Navarro ISD:

Aug. 21: On Friday, Navarro ISD announced on its website three new coronavirus cases, bringing its total cases of COVID-19 to 23 — 10 staff members and 13 students.

The Guadalupe County district suspended its football program on Friday, Aug. 15 after coronavirus cases continued to rise. Anyone who was in close proximity with the infected individuals have been notified, according to superintendent Wendi Russell.

The district will begin its in-person and learning begins on Aug. 19.

Pleasanton ISD:

Aug. 12: Pleasanton ISD released a statement saying it has shut down football practice for two weeks after a player tested positive for COVID-19.
The district has been in contact with the local health department and will follow their guidelines and protocols for returning to activities, the statement noted.

The Eagles won't be able to return to practice until Wednesday, Aug. 26, which is two days before their first game of the season on Friday, Aug. 28.
It is unclear when the player tested positive for COVID-19 and when he was last seen on the football field.

Virtual and face-to-face learning will begin for Pleasanton ISD on Sept. 8.
